As I write this, the Kings season is less than 8 hours away. Staples Center will be packed with fans, some of whom are my brothers in the intense and diehard love we share for our team, who look upon this season as the first night across a hockey journey that will lead our L.A. Kings back to the Finals. Whether that day comes this, next or in the coming seasons is irrelevant. What matters is for the first time in decades our team is expected to not just be hard to play against, but to win.
That expectation falls on the shoulders of a balanced team with three tiers of players – talented youth with great potential like Drew Doughty, Jack Johnson, Wayne Simmonds, Ted Purcell, Trevor Lewis, Alec Martinez and our number 1 goaltender Jonathan Quick, young skilled players with several years of experience like Anze Kopitar, Dustin Brown, Alexander Frolov, Justin Williams, Matt Greene and Jared Stoll and seasoned veterans like Ryan Smyth, Rob Scuderi, Michal Handzus and Sean O’Donnell who not only bring a skill set but know precisely what it takes to earn a playoff spot and win in the post season.
Kings fans are excited not just because it’s October and hockey is back but because many of us know that there is something special about this team. Hope no longer springs eternal. It’s tangible.
