I was wondering why the hell they are called free agents? There is nothing free about them and nobody is signing their representative (i.e., agent) to play. It then occurred to me that the word “free” may not refer to a price tag but rather the “freedom” to sign them. I have no idea if that is right, but it makes sense.

That brings us to “agents.” Why agents? Because the team is hiring them to act as the team’s agent? Seems lame.

I refuse to google this. I encourage you not to google it as well.

Let’s figure this one out together and, when we do, let’s come up with a better moniker than free agent. If an administration can rename french fries, we are certainly up to this task.
