RUMOR: NHL APPROVES FINAL KOVALCHUK PROPOSAL FROM THE DEVILS

Rumors are circulating from credible sources that a few hours ago, the New Jersey Devils submitted a “proposal” to the league and the NHL has given a thumbs up to it. I don’t know what “proposal” means but nobody is using the word “contract” yet. If true however, then this has finally passed the conceptual phase and reached imminent resolution.

I think I speak for most hockey fans when I say, if true, thank goodness and for the sake of the New Jersey Devils’ fans some of whom have no doubt been on suicide watch, it will be interesting to see if your team took a bath on this one. Hopefully Lou had enough common sense to not let his team take a $7.5 million + cap hit.

So, what do you think the cap hit and numbers are? I am guessing 14 years, $98 million with the final 3 years totaling about 8 million of it.

  1. $80-84 million for 13 years.

  2. It would be hysterical if he ended up taking the Kings offer to play in Newark, which, when you think about it, isn’t all that different from Mother Russia.

  3. EJHradek_ESPN As of 3:02 pm ET, NHL Deputy Commish Bill Daly says the league has not yet signed off on concepts for new Kovy-Devils deal. To be continued

    LOL!

The new rumors are that Kovalchuk accepted a $100/15 deal from NJ, but the league hasn’t given their blessing. Lou could still submit the contract if he wants.

    • $100, 15 years may (huge emphasis on may) fly if the backend is high enough. It would have to be $3 million per year minimum for the last 3 years. That is still a retirement contract though. I don’t think the league should let it go beyond 13 years.

  4. I just want to say thank you for all the email updates.. I have learned alot this summer about
players and their contracts. It is a very complex thing. I can see why it is so important to have a good agent. Time to move on and get excited because the season is getting close.
    GO KINGS GO !!!

    • Always our pleasure. Surly and I are getting very excited about training camp, pre-season, FF!! and of course another run to and, this time, through the playoffs.
