Throughout this losing streak, the Islanders have found different ways to lose hockey games. For consecutive loss No. 10, they failed to field a complete lineup.

Opting against the protocol of most every team in the league, the Islanders decided to not bring an extra defenseman such as the reliable Dylan Reese for the West Coast trip – despite playing three games in four nights 3,000 miles away. With Jack Hillen sidelined today with the flu, Scott Gordon was left to coach the game with only five defensemen. As if playing the first-place Kings wasn’t enough of a challenge.

By the run of play, this one was never in doubt. The Kings are a very good team on a roll, the Islanders are a fragile team on a 10-game winless streak whose players speak almost desperately of the need to get the first goal during this painful streak. There is an old expression, which was used in the movie, “300″, which goes, “come home with your shield, or on it.”

The New York Islanders, unfortunately, are coming home on their collective shields.  This was not the road trip that we hoped we would have.  One point out of a possible 6, and, last night, the worse performance of the 3 out west.  No,  the west coast swing was not what the doctor ordered for the Isles.
