ALEC MARTINEZ: MONARCH. KING. ACCOUNTANT.

The AHL Providence Bruin blog, Something’s Bruin, recently did an interview with Monarch’s, and now Kings’ defenseman, Alec Martinez.

Along with fellow assistant captains Thomas Hickey, Oscar Moller and captain Marc-Andre Cliche, Martinez will lead a team with a real shot at placing first in the division and with the talent to clench the Calder Cup. Martinez is well-spoken, hard working and passionate. Last year, he appeared in 55 games for the Monarchs and recorded 30 points, 26 penalty minutes and led the team with a +/- of 12. He has already scored 2 goals and has 6 assists for this season, and will continue to contribute both defensively and offensively in the near winter months.

SB: If you weren’t a hockey player, what do you think your job might be?

AM: Oh boy, I don’t even know where I’d be. My degree’s in accounting, so maybe I’d do that, but I’m kind of glad I’m a hockey player instead.

I’m glad for Martinez to get the call up.  This move isn’t a pleasant one for Jake Muzzin, but in the long run I think its a very beneficial one.  Muzzin has not looked his best his last few games.  Some serious time in the AHL could truly allow Muzzin’s obvious ability to flourish.

As for Martinez’ place on the team, he figures to be here mostly for his success on the powerplay.  I hope Martinez does help solve the Kings’ awful powerplay.  I believe Martinez will play well in stint with the team.  I really do.

Unfortunately, to no fault of Matinez, I do not believe in Murray’s idea that nothing needs to change on the Kings’ powerplay but more of a ‘shot mentality’ and changing one rearguard.  The problems are deeper than that, but this is a topic for another, most hostile article.
