Blasphemous Rumors…

In life, experience brings lessons. Lessons bring change and/or adaptation. Those who have been our readers long enough know we do this solely for the love the game & our team. When we were fortunate enough to develop a contact (a source) that could bring us information before it became news, our first reaction was a positive one and Surly & I decided to post what we were told. What we did not anticipate is that some would take the information as gospel. In retrospect, we should have anticipated that. When providing information, any information, that turns out to be right sometimes and wrong others, regardless of the caveats that led into and permeated the words, some people will rely on it as if it came with 100% accuracy. Who are we to question human nature?

There is a large contingent of our readership that accepts the information for what they are – rumors. Though I am a big Fleetwood Mac fan, I resisted that word in this context in the beginning because I hated its definition. Now, I realize that, absent confirmation from the horse’s mouth, rumors are exactly what they are.

Life experience. Time for adaptation.

We are no longer going to post the information we hear on the main page of our site. That will keep it away from anyone who does not wish to read it. To satisfy the majority of our readers who want to know what we hear and have the necessary grain of salt firmly planted between the cheek and gum, there will be a separate page at the top of the screen which will be updated with information as we receive it. The working title of that page (subject to change) is “Blasphemous Rumors”. If you can’t find the humor in something, might as well skip it, right?

We haven’t yet thought out the structure of the page and in what manner the information will be conveyed. We will figure that out sometime this week or this weekend. However, what Surly & I believe this will do is give an outlet for those who want this information and voluntarily make that journey to the page. As for those who don’t care for it and don’t want to read it – they won’t.

Were Surly & I tempted to eliminate the rumors all together? Yes. But, we are going to experiment with this first and if ongoing experience tells us (and the readers confirm) they would rather not hear or see any of it, then so be it.

  1. Man, ‘Rumours’ is my favorite album of all time.

  2. Hope you don’t get rid of it. Rumor mill stuff is fun. It’s like the “what if” of professional sports. 90% of the time things don’t come to fruition. That doesn’t mean that there weren’t discussions or it was completely false. It’s just fun.

  3. Good idea to separate the rumors.

You should also consider cutting ties with your Doughty source. Honestly. How many strikes are you going to give this guy? Rumors are only as good as the source, and this guy is clearly a little to eager to jump the gun.

  4. I don’t think you should worry too much about the naysayers… just keep doing what your doing… it’s entertaining and certainly made the summer more fun… I wouldn’t bother with the separate subheading either- maybe just put “Blasphemous Rumors” as the first part of the title to any future post

Like chriscap said, this is all about the fun.

  5. Rumors are enormously important in the off season. Thanks for having the balls to propagate them. Keep ’em coming…

  6. Things are getting interesting…

  7. oh please people need to get over themselves…..if I post that the blue lines on Staples Ice will be closed this year because they have discovered oil and will be setting up drill rigs are you all going to bring your hard hats to the games??????

I say keep on doing what you are doing….Surly & Scribe is a very enjoyable reading experience done by two great fans who bring info & insight to the masses!

PS: I think we all own 1/3000th of the oil rights as season ticket holders.

  8. Is this all because of the criticism from the guy over at Jewels from the Crown? Let him bitch all he wants, the more blog spots the better and I try to hit each of the sites each day or two. Keep putting out all the information you have and we will be able to determine how much weight to put into each source.

    • No. That was more entertaining than anything else. This is because we feel the rumors have distracted from the content / strength of this site – which is the writing and unfiltered dialogue we have with the fans. We don’t want the rumors to be the main course. They should be a small tapas or an extra sweet dessert every once in a while.

  9. Keep the main page news feed all inclusive. Adopt a little icon system to clearly denote what the article is (ie, News, Commentary, Blasphemous Rumor, etc.). This way, everyone knows what they’re getting up front. Maybe add filtering options. Check out for a good example of how they allow visitors to filter article types.

Or you could always adopt a B1-B5 rating system for how blasphemous the rumor is. ;D
