Terry “I’m Not Going To Motivate” Murray Slips Up

Let’s begin by recalling a comment Murray made a few weeks ago regarding Loktionov and Voynov.

“I’m not going to motivate them,”…

….”Pro players have to motivate themselves, that’s your job as a player – is to get yourself ready to play hockey.”

OK, fair enough. That’s one way of ‘coaching’. But then what the hell does this mean?

“I don’t want to ease him back in. If he’s going to get in, he’s got to play. He’s been out, he’s been doing all of the skating and all of the drills that the extra players do, who are not in the lineup, and he’s got the green light, emotionally and mentally, to go out and play and he’s got to give us everything. Do things right, do things hard.’’

Murray said that today regarding Penner’s return to the lineup. Let’s focus in on the bold (seeing as that’s why I put the emphasis there).

Who exactly is giving Penner this emotional and mental green light? Have you ever heard of such a phrase. Was Penner seeing a therapist as well as a physician? Perhaps there is more to Penner’s little finger injury than anyone wanted to let on. Maybe Murray just doesn’t know what the hell he is talking about, making shit up as he goes along and this means nothing because Murray is paid to coach hockey, not to know what words mean when strung together in specific ways. I find it very strange to specify that the kind of green light Penner has been given is mental and emotional. Aside from that being weird on its own, does this not fly directly of the face of the assertion that “pro players have to motivate themselves”? If that is true, then this green light of emotions business makes even less sense.

If, for fun, we want to take this to its literal extreme, giving someone a mental and emotional green light could mean that they have been held back mentally and emotionally. You only give a player a green light for physical contact because up until that point you have said to that player ‘no physical contact for you’. So am I to now assume that up until today the message to Penner has been ‘don’t use your head and your feelings are stupid’? That’s kind of a funny thought, that maybe up until now Murray has been bad mouthing Penner. Could you imagine, Mr. Soft-spoken teacher coach who never yells, skating by Penner during practice and in true Reggie Dunlop fashion whispering into his ear as he flies by ‘You’re fat and no one likes you’. Ah hell, let’s just go there, I want you to picture Murray saying to Penner as he comes off the bench ‘Hey Pens, your wife sucks pussy‘.

But thank god that’s over, because now Penner has the emotional and mental green light to try hard.

This very well could be yet another case of me picking something apart to a tortured extreme, but I just can’t get over those two words, emotionally and mentally. At the very least, this has to be an admission of Penner’s problems being in his head, an odd way of calling the guy out to pick up his play. We knew all this about Penner, but does anyone else have that little conspiracy bell ringing softly in the back of their heads? The one that is saying ‘Penner wasn’t really hurt… He was too mentally and emotionally fucked up from sucking to play hockey’. Hey, there’s a reason I don’t listen to that schmuck and his soft grating voice that sounds so much like my own.

What do you make of this? Am I reading into nothing here?

  1. Well, (fire) Terry Murray says a lot of things that are cryptic. I’m thinking Penner knows he has been doing bad and is down on himself some. Murray probably has called him out to some degree as well. Penner may just not “get” the system as I don’t think he has ever played in a defense first system before. Let’s face it, unless your name is Kopitar, and so far Richards, this system does not favor offensive players, and that is what Penner is.

I think you may be reading too much into it, just based off the fact Murray says a lot of cryptic, stupid shit. Its hard to take anything he says at face value or by reading into it, because doing so either way ends with a big ?

  2. I am confused…not by Murray but by you:

‘Your fat and no one likes you’. Ah he’ll, let’s just go there, I want you to picture Murray saying to Penner as he comes off the bench ‘Hey Pens, your wife sucks pussy’.

Your fat what? Fat ass? Fat head?

Sucks pussy? Sucks? If I am Penner, I respond…actually, I have no idea how Penner would respond to that.

    • Oh boo hoo I brain farted a your/you’re.

Don’t get the sucks pussy reference? For shame.

    • Lol. That was a funny comment. Well, Terry is a cryptic figure. He does the sly shit talk, talk shit without actually saying it. I get what you’re saying, but as a guy, I won’t get pissed if you call me a piece of shit to my face as much as I would some backhanded comment. Guys are more literal people. Girls tend to be the backhanded type (unless they are really pissed). So the way I look at it Terry is a bitch for not saying I t like it is. Quit beating around the bush, that’s what you do to women to turn them on. Men want you to go straight to the stump… that’s how we “grow.”

    • :26 seconds in.

      I don’t know if Penner’s wife’s name is Susan.

      • Lol. Slapshot. Great movie.

So Terry Murray is Newman and Hanrahan is Penner.. I’d love to see that fight.

Newman actually looks a bit like Murray in that movie too.

Not a bad looking wife for a puss on skates.

  3. This is an interesting comment but I really cannot read into it without speculating.

The onus is mostly on the players to get up for games. I am not sure what the standard is around the NHL. Bruce Boudreaux on HBO last year, yelling and swearing, seemed capable of motivating players but that did not work for long.

My own speculation is that Murray is no dummy and knows Penner has personal problems. Perhaps it is Murray’s old school way of saying “I don’t give a fuck what your problems are…your obligation is to the game…get off your slothy ass and contribute to this team…”.

Another way to look at it is that Murray is smart enough to realize that he could not motivate or help this pathetic bag of shit no matter how hard he tries.

  4. “This very well could be yet another case of me picking something apart to a tortured extreme”. Most definitely.

  5. It may just be TM saying “Look asshole you’re a pro and as a pro you should Know how to get ready for games. I don’t need to hold your hand anymore!”

I can dig that to a point but I think part of the job of a coach is to motivate the team. Maybe not for every single game but when the team needs motivating then the coach needs to get in there and motivate. It’s like you’re in a war and you’re grinding it out daily and you heard that your general just said “They don’t need me to motivate them! They are professional soldiers and they need to go out there and kick ass without that!”

Quite honestly if I was a player after hearing that TM comment my attitude would be “Well TM that’s fine. I’m gonna do what I gotta do to win a game. So fuck you if I feel the need to take things into my own hands at times.”

  6. I agree and i believe it is mental. If you knew the story behind Penner and his wife you’d get it as well as the sucks pussy reference.

    • Ahh. All I know is she was married to some other Russian player before him. I don’t really know the backstory.

I like Penner the person… hopefully I can start liking Penner the player soon as well.

    • I didn’t know of or mean to insinuate Penner has problems with his wife. All I know is that I think his problems on the ice are largely mental with a healthy dash of play-defense-damnit Murray hockey.

      • I think fakeDP is implying that the rumor that was going around during last year’s playoffs about Penner and some slut are true. Which is lol since the only evidence for it being true is some facebook (or other assorted gay shit like facebook) account posting some retarded story.

  7. Guess you didnt want people to know the truth huh? I see you deleted my last post.

  8. he’s got the green light, emotionally and mentally, to go out and play and he’s got to give us everything.

… Maybe he’s been playing hurt in the early going, and the inability to produce because he wasn’t physically at 100% affected his confidence? And now, he has the green light to recover that confidence?

If I saw loafing out there, it’d be one thing. But, I haven’t seen that from Penner. I just see him afraid to make a mistake more often than not, afraid to risk anything in order to avoid being put into a vulnerable position. Those are the classic signs, to me, of a lack of confidence. It reminds me of Teddy Purcell when he was here – he wasn’t a confident player, and it severely affected his offensive production.

Purcell wasn’t confident because the coach and the organization didn’t believe in him. Penner might be in the same boat. I don’t think Murray wants to play him, and I don’t think Lombardi even wanted him, either. I think Dean made the trade for Penner because he was on the hot seat to do something. Dean made the “softball player” comment about Penner in the off-season, and that’s not a comment you make about someone you believe in. Once the Kings have a taker for Penner in a trade, he’s as good as gone in my view.
