Adversity. Opportunity. Heads Up, Kings Fans

30th in goals per game comes with an expected level of consternation. It also brings attention to the problem. Better 30th than 25th. It forces general managers and coaches to make adjustments or changes.

Failing to meet expectations, those shared by the media, pundits and your fellow fans, brings disappointment. It also mandates questions – were the expectations reasonable? Is the team playing below its skill set? Should changes be made?

Consecutive first round playoff exits frustrate. They also set a bar of playoff success as the only meaningful measure. It pressures management, coaches and players to get there or be replaced.

Money spent to the salary cap without results angers. Anger brings orders that end with “or else.”

There is opportunity in everything, but especially failure.

Surly & I will do our part.

Do yours.

Never give up hope.

Never settle for anything other than a team that will contend for the Stanley Cup and, one day soon, win it all.

  1. Put in the context of following this team for 40 years without a championship, the current problems are just part of the same story. This team is like the girl you yearn for but could never get.

The parity in the league right now is incredible. Despite many teams, like the Kings, are only a small margin above .500.

I suppose it is better to slump in the beginning of the season than towards the end. Hopefully they can get it together over the next few games. If you think about it, with just one more goal a game this team could be a lot better.

I think they can do it…

  2. Never give up hope.

… Tell that to the people who were happy the Kings lost last night, and are going to keep rooting for the Kings to lose until Murray gets fired. Unless that’s the official position here, now?

Despite many teams, like the Kings, are only a small margin above .500.

… Thank you Mr. Bettman for not counting OT losses as losses! It makes us look better than we are!

  3. These phone calls from the Kings I’m getting every day would be answered a lot nicer if they scored just a few more goals…

  4. I don’t have season seats, I buy the packages now that I live in Orange County ( I escaped from Burbank and I won’t go back). I do see the Kings every time they visit the Pond. There’s something exhilarating about wearing the purple and black in foreign rinks…

  5. Just taking a gander of highlights on NHL.com and not only do we suck ass in scoring but we have got to be one of the most Boringest teams in the entire NHL.

The time is now…yeah to get rid of that dinosaur Terry Murray.

    • Oh please don’t even start me with that one! I’d appreciate that you don’t even bring that one up. I live on the east coast and between Versus (which you obviously get out there) and the Rangers, Devils post game shows I see loads of highlights.

It’s almost like you live in time of the caveman, then have people tell you that there is electricity, and you don’t want to believe it, but then people show you a functioning electric appliance and then turn on a lightbulb.

How the hell can guys score goals the way they do? Seems almost unbelievable. So, yes, they are boring. The offense looks like it needs an enema.

  6. And Bobby, a day later, want to reference back to your breakdown on the Lombardi comments.

After really thinking about them, boy are you spot on about his reference to the defense. Maybe he should change sports and start working for the Baltimore Ravens? Oh wait, nevermind. They’ve already won a Super Bowl, and even the Ravens have realized you need to pass now to win in the nfl.

  7. I watched the Sabres v Flyers game last night…man, what a game. Creativity, smash-mouth hockey, etc etc.

90% of the Kings game is dump, chase, don’t retrieve puck…more defensive play.
    Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

I won’t be suprised if Murray starts counting each dump into the opponents zone as “a good chance”, followed by saying, “I liked our opportunities there.”

Soon, he’ll want players to start shooting from the red line: broaden his “shot mentality” …maybe Quicky can start taking some shots from his end. because after all, it’s the quantity of shots, from anywhere on the ice, that matters.

Regardless, I’ll watch every fucking game. Wear my god damn jersey and god damn hat and root em on just like I’ve done my whole fucking life.

When will they cease making us suffer?

    • He might say, “I liked our opportunities” but he’ll definitely say, “I liked our compete”

      What does that mean Terry?

    • TM had a comment I forgot after playing what team about being too “cute” with the puck. I missed that game so I don’t know what he’s talking about. To me though it seems like the guys were just trying to find ways to be more creative. So to me it sounds like they’re being penalized for trying to be creative when TM says they need to find more creativity. That creativity isn’t going to come to the squad overnight especially under a guy like TM.

So what does TM think creativity is? I’m guessing that when you gain the red line you dump it in cross ice opposite corner instead of down the line? Whenever TM talks about being more creative you know it’s all a load of bullshit. The team is so confused right now they’ve got vertigo.

  8. Let me ask this question to those of you who say no to a coaching change and actually talk shit to those who wish we lose so Murray can be fired.

Is the time now? Is that what is written on billboards? Have we as fans (and a lot of us as season ticket holders) not put up with enough mediocre bullshit over … suffice to says decades? Were the Kings not supposed to FINALLY have a team to compete for a Cup?

So what… you guys talk shit to those wanting him fired by saying we aren’t being supportive of the team and how can we wish the Kings to lose? That we are real fans?

Bullshit. It’s fans like you who will keep this mess in place. Yeah, let me cheer on the Kings just so they can win enough games so that Murray doesn’t get fired. So next year the same bullshit happens. At some point, enough is enough. If your kid is fucking up, or your friend is fucking up, there is only so much encouragement you can give them. At some point you give up and let them run their course and realize shit on their own.

I’m not saying giving up on the team, but giving up on the system. I obviously don’t wish ill-will on the Kings, I love ‘em. But at some point enough is enough and change is needed. The time is now. But instead of that time being a deep run in the playoffs, it’s time for a new coaching change that will bring a system in that actually scores more than the quota.

    • That thing you say about quota. I noticed we’ve all been referencing that lately. Maybe they could start doing a thing like the Lakers do when they hold the opponent to under a 100 pts.
Kings break the 2 goal mark….. free tacos for everyone?
I can’t believe I just wrote that. Well, I’m not worried about looking good.

    • Let me ask this question to those of you who say no to a coaching change and actually talk shit to those who wish we lose so Murray can be fired.

… I’m pretty sure this is directed at me. I’ve said in the past that I won’t shed a tear if Murray is fired. I’ve also said that a firing isn’t going to make much of a difference, unless the players have been deliberately playing poorly just to get the coach fired – but that, I don’t know.

I’ve also said that, yeah, it’s damn disheartening to see a celebratory attitude at this place after a loss to the team I hate more than any other. If you want the coach fired THAT bad, great – but go to the opponents’ fan site and root against the Kings over there or something. Does it have to be done here?

Is the time now? Is that what is written on billboards?

… Oh My God MARKETING SLOGANS! That’s the last straw! Remember when the slogan was “Serious Hockey”? That was funny. My friends and I used to say the true slogan back then should have been “Seriously Shitty Hockey”. Good times.

Have we as fans (and a lot of us as season ticket holders) not put up with enough mediocre bullshit over … suffice to says decades? Were the Kings not supposed to FINALLY have a team to compete for a Cup?

… Dude, I’ve been a fan for a long time – since 1984, to be exact. Some fans have been with the team longer than that. Some have been fans since the beginning of the team. I don’t need to be informed of how long I’ve put up with this. Everyone in life has their cross to bear, and the Kings are my damned cross. I’m not happy with mediocrity, or losing.

But I’m not going to lie to myself about what the Kings have here. I don’t give a shit if the Kings were supposed to finally have a team to compete for a Cup, whatever the fuck that’s supposed to mean, anyway. The Kings don’t have a team that is likely to win the Cup, regardless of what the pundits or the billboards or some of the fans say they were “supposed” to do. I won’t say the Kings have ZERO chance, but a helluva lot of things would have to go right for them to do it, and right now that is not happening. They’re a dark horse, and for those of us who’ve followed hockey and other sports for a long time – a dark horse is usually no horse at all.

Bullshit. It’s fans like you who will keep this mess in place. Yeah, let me cheer on the Kings just so they can win enough games so that Murray doesn’t get fired. So next year the same bullshit happens.

… You’re barking up the wrong tree, pal. Take your grievances to the GM. He LOVES greivances, as evidenced by the past off-season. I’m sure he’s watching the games, or at least knows the results of the games. If he felt that the coach he hired wasn’t getting the job done, why would he not fire him? I mean, he’s supposed to be the best GM evar, right? Best GM the Kings have ever had? Man, if I had a nickel for every time I heard that over the years, hell I could own the Kings.

I just want to see the Kings win the game that they have in front of them. I don’t care who coaches them to it, or who the hero of the game might be, or how they get the W. I just want them to win the game. I couldn’t care if Ethan Moreau scored the winning goal. I just want to see my team do well. It’s not complicated. Sure, I have opinions on the Kings. But those are for before and after the game. When the game is on, I want to see the Kings win.

I’m not saying giving up on the team, but giving up on the system.

… If the players were actually executing the system, I’d see your point. But they’re not. Look at the games that they’ve lost. Look at why they’ve lost those games. They’re not losing because of a “system”. They are losing because they are not playing the game right. They are turning over the puck, they are making mental mistakes, they are not executing their chances properly.

I’ve gone on record as saying that the Kings will pull out of it, but they may not. They may just slump all year. Will a coaching change help pull them out of their doldrums? Possibly, and I’m not necessarily opposed to a change – but I think this is a players’ issue here. I think Murray has done all he can to account for the lack of scoring. He’s loosened some of the defensive restrictions, he’s allowed for more open play. And the team is seeing more chances, but for one reason or ten, the team is not putting those chances away. The team is still sloppy exiting their zone, they’re sloppy on their breakouts, and they’re sloppy on their dump-ins. Is that on the coach?

  9. Fox just posted this on Facebook: Mitchell/Lewis/Martinez possible return on Saturday.

I say now what? Voynov can’t be scratched not when he has 4 goals and has been playing better than most of the defenseman right now.

Terry better not fuck this up!

    • DL is worried that someone might pick up Martinez off waivers if he tries to send him down. At this point, I’d send Drewskie down. No point in having him in the press box every day. Nothing personal against the guy, but maybe he will get a chance to play elsewhere.

  10. I definitely agree with this. If this Kings team was in 6th place all year in the Western Conference, nothing would change and the team wouldnt be good enough to make it out of the first round. At least this way, if it keeps up, Lombardi will be sent a message by his team’s play that, without any doubt, “you better no the done Dean, Mike Richards was not nearly enough, you have to keep the foot on the gas and keep adding to this team.”

Well see what ends up happening but I think incentive to improve the team is exactly what the Kings need right now.

    • As much as I hate to say it, pretty much other than the goaltending, everything about the team has to improve, including the d (not Willie Mitchell, and Voynov will keep getting better) – Doughty’s play, the forwards, I don’t even have the words. Maybe ‘watch Mike Richards carefully how he plays’?

But the org doesn’t get off free either! I’ve been thinking w every loss, well those -2 pts get em that much closer to a good draft position. Then it occurred to me last night; does that just mean that DL will look for another ‘manly man’ type of forward to draft whose upside might take him to 13 goals?

  11. Seeing this as the front item on http://espn.go.com/nhl/ is depressing:

Role Reversal: One of these teams was expected to be leading the West at this point, but no one was betting on the Wild over the Kings
