Our Kings, Who Hath Won the Stanley Cup, Hallowed Be Thy Game
Bring your lungs…
This is your open forum.
There’s nothing like a good dose of bad blood between premiere players. Having watched just about all of the Caps/Flyers games these two went head to head in, it’s a lot of fun. Richards is a pretty smart player, and has the ability to find an achilles heel pretty quickly (esp with goalies, he can unnerve them big time, esp yapping. Ryan Miller hates him, he always gets him unglued ). With Ovie it’s his ego and generally, (as the video shows) they go at each other physiclly and on the score board. That said, richards will (and has)played on the fact Ovie has a good sized ego.
There was a game a few years ago Flyers up by 1 away game un the 3rd. Caps got the PP and as Richards come on to PK, OVie is behind him. They are both skating towards the Caps end for a faceoff. The whole time Richards has his head turned sideways over his shoulder and it yapping at Ovie. This continued thru the faceoff. So Ovie has the puck and Richards looks him right in the eye and bangs his stick on the ice (sort of ‘go ahead, I dar e you) and sure enough, Ovie made a move to get by him and Richards stole the puck and went the other way. He didn’t score, but Ovie was angry at taking the bait and between that and richards yapping at him, he was distracted and off his game for the rest of the third.
So it’s usually one of my favorite battles to watch…and esp now that MR is back at center where he has more freedom and can stay in control.
Maybe it will spring us to life – seeing some passionate play.
I’m dreading watching another boring game from the Kings. Maybe a little Richards/Ovechkin fisticuffs will wake them up? Doubt it – Kings couldn’t score against a Pee Wee team (or the Blue Jackets – see the Ducks put of 7 goals last night?).
Winning without scoring may allow the Kings sneak into the playoffs ass first, but Kings hockey this year is sleep inducing.
“Kings hockey this year is sleep inducing”
“see the Ducks put of 7 goals last night?”
… I think someone’s found a new favorite team. Anaheim is looking for all the fans they can get, and I’m sure they’ll welcome you.
By the way, did you like the Kings better during the Crawford era? Because they scored quite a few more goals, and as we all know, all excitement in hockey is from goal scoring amirite?
For once I agree with your sentiments.
We have the talent to score goals — and we WILL score goals.
But it’s nice keeping the other sonsabitches off the scoreboard. Pulford hockey trumps Crawford hockey any day.
A lot of fans keep bringing that game up like 7 goals for Anahiem is the standard.
I do hope the uptempo style Sutter has been trying to get the team playing, shows up tonight, because against Columbus the Kings played it different.
Maybe underestimated the BJ’s and figured they could dummy down their game against the worst team in the league, then ended up oversimplifying their game a little too much.
“Maybe underestimated the BJ’s and figured they could dummy down their game against the worst team in the league, then ended up oversimplifying their game a little too much.”
… It was just a case of Columbus really bearing down and playing a good game against the Kings. Any team in this league is capable of doing that. It wasn’t like one team showed up and one didn’t; both teams played pretty well and the game was decided by one goal. That’s going to happen in a long season.
Washington’s right about where the Kings are in terms of overall quality, perhaps a little better than the Kings. I don’t foresee anything but a close game. I couldn’t care less about the tempo of the game; if the opportunity and the open ice is available to rush the puck, then they’ll do it. If it’s not there, it’s not going to help to force it. There aren’t any style points in hockey. If the Kings win 2-1 or 1-0 the rest of the season, I would have zero problems with it so long as they win more than they lose.
I thought the Jackets defense was awful. It got better as the game wore on and the Kings got more frustrated. Those PKs certainly built up the Jacket’s defensive confidence a ton. But in that 1st period and most of the second, the Jackets defense was just pitiful and the Kings’ couldn’t cash in.
And the problem with only winning 1-0 or 2-1 is that there are going to be games where the score is higher than that. Your goalie is going to crap the bed sometimes and sometimes the other team is just going to go on a tear. You need to be able to win those games when they happen, and the fact that the Kings can’t break out of this 2 goals or less crap more than 10% of the time they play is going to bite them in the ass in the end, it’s simply a matter of time. It wil either happen in the season or in the playoffs, but it will happen.
“But in that 1st period and most of the second, the Jackets defense was just pitiful and the Kings’ couldn’t cash in.”
… This is you not wanting to give the opposition any credit for anything. Sanford was sharp when he needed to be, and when he gave up rebounds, they were being cleared out by his defense. There were a lot of one-and-dones early on.
“And the problem with only winning 1-0 or 2-1 is that there are going to be games where the score is higher than that. Your goalie is going to crap the bed sometimes and sometimes the other team is just going to go on a tear.”
… That works both ways. Sometimes the other team’s goalie is going to crap the bed, and sometimes the Kings are just going to go on a tear. The situation with the Kings is that they have very good goaltending and very good defense, and as such they shouldn’t go through AS many of those type of games as their opponents do.
As for Sanford being good… his glove was good and I’ll give you that he was smothering rebounds. But I wasn’t talking about Sanford, I was talking about their defense and how porous it was.
That works both ways. Sometimes the other team’s goalie is going to crap the bed, and sometimes the Kings are just going to go on a tear.
But that’s my point JT…. it is supposed to go both ways but it isn’t. The Kings aren’t going on any tears. We need to be able to do once in a while and that isn’t happening. Two 4 goal games in the last 21 isn’t going to cut it in the end. If we up our GPG average by atleast .5-1, we will pay the consequence eventually, no matter how good our defense or Quick play. I highly doubt we will be ushering in a new era of purely defensive teams winning in the playoffs.
“But that’s my point JT…. it is supposed to go both ways but it isn’t. The Kings aren’t going on any tears. We need to be able to do once in a while and that isn’t happening.”
… This season, the Kings have scored 4 or more goals seven times. Their opponents have scored 4 or more goals only five times.
It may seem to you that the Kings don’t go on any tears but they do, and they have – more so than their opponents have. And I don’t expect that to change much – during the regular season, at least. The Kings have better defense and goaltending than almost all of their opponents do.
“and the fact that the Kings can’t break out of this 2 goals or less crap more than 10% of the time they play is going to bite them in the ass in the end, it’s simply a matter of time. It wil either happen in the season or in the playoffs, but it will happen.”
… All that tells me is that the Kings aren’t a good enough team to do much in the playoffs, to which I would respond “duh, I told you that before the season started, remember?” If the Kings even make the playoffs this season, I would think it would be a pretty damned good achievement considering the leadership in the organization’s been as terrible as it has been this season.
I said early on that I would consider the Kings winning a playoff round as a resounding success. They’re certainly nowhere close to being top four in their conference, so any series victory would have to come against a superior team; an upset, in other words. At that point, It wouldn’t be a question of the lack of scoring biting the Kings in the ass, it would be a case of simply losing to a better team.
I disagree. They played a 1-4 ALL DAY, literally sat back and let us come to them while clogging up the neutral zone. When we got possession time (which we did often), they collapsed and cleared out rebounds. CBJ may suck but they were tight and conservative on Saturday and we could not finish our chances.
At that point, It wouldn’t be a question of the lack of scoring biting the Kings in the ass, it would be a case of simply losing to a better team.
Well that assumes that the Kings scoring problems are insurmountable as they are currently put together in terms of players and coaching. Kompon aside, I don’t believe that to be the case. I think this roster is capable of doing more on the score sheet, but if they can’t turn it around in time, then the Kings could very lose to a team that is better, but shouldn’t be better. I know, shoulda, woulda, coulda, all that matters is what IS. But again, it comes down to the roster. I think this roster is capable of scoring more. You seemed to think it is scoring about as much as it is capable of scoring.
Against Columbus I noticed the forecheck being far more simple. The Kings weren’t out played by any means, but the forecheck was shoot and crash, shoot and crash all night long.
The shots were heavily favored from the high slot, and points area, with players fishing for rebounds. A little different focus form the previous 6 games before.
On style, the Kings seem to be in control better at a higher tempo, because their not chasing the puck, or the play as much.
Their still taking dumb penalties, but have more flow when their moving the puck up ice quicker. When their playing slow and methodical their vulnerable to teams that play a speed game, and they seem flatfooted, and uninspired all game long when they do.
You could tell right away which teams have their feet going, and which ones don’t.
I wouldn’t mind seeing them ratchet it back up again against Washington.
I think the point is just that at least the Ducks are CAPABLE of scoring 7 goals in a game. Fans just want to see that the team can do it sometimes. You don’t need to score 7 goals every game. Hell you don’t need to score 4 every game, but you need to be capable of doing it every now and again, that’s all.
We all know offense isn’t the Ducks’ problem. Though it is a misnomer to just say “look the Ducks scored 7 and they are worse thasn us!”
No I pretty much found Crawford hockey to be boring too.
Really? I think the games have been very exciting. Maybe I am weird that way in that I break the game up as I watch it into the 3 different zones and analyze accordingly. I love our offensive forecheck and pressure. Our D is lights out. We can get better in the neutral zone especially on the regroups and zone entries.
Say nothing, Scribe.
After the game you can yak your guts out. But in the meantime maintain a discreet and respectful silence.
Unless, of course, you have only Doom and Gloom to predict.
Otherwise, put a cork in it. Every time you vocalize your optimism Vlad the Impaler rams a hockey stick up our ass.
lol. Sutt off!
Supposedly Bernier is gonna play. I guess Sutter’s goalie logic is purely East vs. West.
Not sure if this has already been said as I’m on an Android phone and can’t see the current comments, but can someone PLEASE bring pancakes and throw them on the ice during warmups/on Penner’s first shift? I’d say when he scores a goal but well…you know…
Im waiting for brown and ovie to lay big hits on each other cause you know its gunna happen
More like Richards and Ovi.
I can’t wait to see this game! I’m going to be there tonight!! 118 too, woo! I’ll be as loud as I can
Hey JT – I used to think you had something to offer when it came to talking hockey, but the bucket went dry a long time ago and now it’s all worn out cliches and prepubescent churlishness. Do me a favor – if you don’t have something intelligent, or at least creative to say…shut the fuck up. You’re as boring as the Kings are.
Hey now, play nice. Being a rude sunovabitch is my job round these parts. Besides, JT has plenty of creativity things to say. Advocating for trading Quick was highly imaginative.
… What are you doing wasting your time here if you don’t want to watch the Kings anymore? It’s not my fault you’re all “boo hoo I only like scoring” and can’t appreciate a team that has lost only 2 games in their last ten. Go watch The View or some shit and leave the hockey talk to those that actually LIKE the sport, OK?
I find this post loosely hypocritical. It’s similar in spirit to when people have told you to actually watch the games in response to you posting a bunch of stats, which always rubs you the wrong way.
Edit: then again I just realized you were responding to being attacked. The WordPress app is awesome, except that it doesn’t show me what a comment is in reply to.
… It rubs me the wrong way because people KNOW I watch the games and yet still tell me I don’t. A little different from calling out people who feel the need to let everyone know that they’re NOT going to watch the games.
Anyway, it’s game time. Bernier’s getting his biweeky start, so I can’t miss anything.
He didn’t say he wasn’t going to watch the games. Or did he say that somewhere else?
… Whatever, dude. He said he was “dreading it”. Might as well have said he wasn’t watching.
If someone doesn’t want to watch the games, fine. Just don’t act like a damned baby about it.
And hey, Clifford converted a nice big rebound. I’m very happy for him. He deserves to get a few.
Because he went 5 hole. Our players ignore the 5 hole all too often. That was a beauty.
3-2 Kings I’m fucking calling it right now
1 thing everybody forgot against the Blue Jackets is that the Kings were playing so well that at the 1/2 way mark of the game, I think Columbus only had like 7 shots on goal, and 11 the 2nd 1/2.
I didn’t forget. It just adds to the embarrassment.
… Yeah, bitches!!! Browpitar getting it done.
And, good tenacity along the boards by Williams. Well done all around.
… WOW. Kyle Clifford.
He’s a fight away from the Gordie Howe hat trick.
Oh he’s getting it. What a shot!
Can’t say you don’t love this up-tempo game can ya?
… I didn’t think Washington’s D would be this porous. There are lanes everywhere; a lot of open ice.
And, obviously the book on Vokoun is to go after him five hole.
They’ve found more seams in this game than in the last 10 combined!
I’m liking what I see tonight. It’s like the Clifford from last year.
Too bad Cliffy didn’t get the Gordie Howe hat trick. Don’t know when he’ll get another 2 point game…
Wonder if this is where a coach steps in and says don’t fight cause it might be what the other team needs to get themselves back into it. That’s what I’m telling myself and I’m sticking with it.
Best game that I’ve seen all season thus far. (11:14 @ 2P) The Kings are passing, having chemistry, playing with some passion, and finishing checks.
… Penner driving to the blue paint, using his size. I could cry tears of happiness right now.
You shoulda heard the crowd.
… Quite a night. Five goals. And you know what I love about it? Yeah, they got their offense going, but they have only given up one – and a soft one at that. Bernier would want that one back for sure.
The defense has been fucking OUTSTANDING. Doughty is up big time for this game. Everything turned after Ovechkin leveled him. Whole team picked it up.
… Great. I fucking jinxed them.
I need to go hang my head in sorrow.
(because covering Johanssen was the easy easy out)
Agreed, and more important than wanting it back, I think he really stepped it up for the rest of the game. Their chances were spread out there through the first and second but he stayed sharp on a few really good chances and took away a lot of options. Great to see him sit a few games and come out with a win.
Great game…hustle all around. Proud of the boys tonight! It’s a very good sign to see the team carry in the puck rather than dump and chase. 4th line does it with regularity but that’s ok that’s their game right now and it’s effective. JB is deceptively cool I don’t see how teams in need of a quality goalie wouldn’t be clawing their way towards a trade for him.
My first home game of the GD season this Thursday. Finally!
Jim Fox diagramming Mitchell’s punch on Chimera might be one of my favorite moments of the season.
Chimera deserves the Greg Lougayness award of the year.
Half expected Jimmy to say “back and to the left… back and to the left.”
