Kings vs. Stars: It Was The Best Of Games, It Was The Worst Of Games

In high school, I knew a kid named Brenden. I punched him on the school bus once. He was talking shit. I turned around, he looked at me, I looked at him and I popped him right on the nose. It bled. His eyes watered. I felt better.

There was nobody to punch tonight. Strangely, I am ok with that. I am fine. Surly is not fine. If you heard an explosion and saw a mushroom cloud between L.A. and the Valley, that was Surly’s head. It combusted.

Why am I fine?

We scored four goals. We came back twice, down by two goals, tied the game and took the lead. As far as I am concerned, we owned the overtime, as we did the second and third periods. Losing in the shootout isn’t losing. The shootout isn’t even hockey.

The powerplay rapidly improved. And I know why. After the first powerplay that looked like garbage, Surly leaned over to me and said, “we have to come up with a different name than powerplay when we write about it. We can’t call it that. There is no fucking power.” I thought for a moment and responded, “boob.” He laughed with a “what?” “We’re going to call it boob,” I told him. “Boob?” he asked. “Boob,” I repeated. Throughout the rest of the game, we had six boobs, at which Surly & I screamed “BOOB!” at the outset and a few times throughout. We scored on 50% of the remaining six. Boob.

Did the officiating suck?

Kind of.

Doughty oversold that tripping call. It was a trip but if he just fell, verses dive hard forward, he probably gets that call. The fact that it led to a rush the other way and a goal is the part that burned my butt and Surly…well, Surly nearly lost it.

Was that a penalty on Brenden Morrow? You tell me. I haven’t seen the replay and they didn’t show it at the game.

Mike Richards stepped up but fighting Morrow requires someone bigger and stronger. On the one hand, bravo to Richards for stepping in. On the other, we lost this game because of those two penalties. Another butt burning.

Did Doughty charge? I think so. He was helped by a push but he did not stop. I can only assume that is why the goal did not count.

Benn should have gotten a penalty. Souray should have been ejected from the game. The bastards dog pile Justin Williams, both are throwing punches, Souray comes in while Justin is down, that was the worst part of the officiating tonight. I hope the league looks at suspending Souray. I may be dreaming on that one.

They missed a couple of obstruction calls but that is nearly every game.

Am I concerned?

Yes. I am worried about Anze Kopitar’s injury but stressing or freaking out about it solves nothing. My brothers and sisters, don’t give yourself an ulcer. I suspect it is a concussion or a shoulder. I haven’t seen the video replay (they didn’t show one at the game) of Brenden Morrow’s hit…I have decided I hate that name…but the consensus is it wasn’t a “dirty” hit. We’ll see. As I write this, we don’t have a status update other than Darryl Sutter’s statement that he has a bloody nose. Update: Call it a sneaking suspicion – or maybe I heard something :) – but I think Kopi will be fine. We’ll see.

Kopitar and Simon Gagne’s absence, the latter of which is likely the rest of the season, is the loss of two top six forwards. Dean Lombardi is stressed out. Who comes up from Manchester? Cliche? Does a wing get a call up and Brad Richardson, Trevor Lewis or Jarret Stoll go to center? This can be the subject of another article but the options are many…and some of them have a yikes component.

Mike Richards had an awful game. Another one. With Kopitar’s injury, Richie better get his shit together and fast.

My three L.A. Kings stars

3. Trevor Lewis

2. Jack Johnson

1. Anze Kopitar

I have an image of Surly struggling with the key to his front door, thinking about our peanut & clitoris discussion and laughing, thinking about the game, filling up with rage, breaking his door down and then trying to figure out how he will explain that one to his girlfriend who likely jumped twenty feet out of bed.

You’re up Kings fans.

  1. I think the problem with the officiating was not blown calls, it was a complete lack of game control. No announcement for why the late goal was a no-goal, no communication with the players, and no quick response when it turned into a free-for-all scrum inside the Stars net. From my viewpoint, it looked like the refs were lazy and late, and unwilling to do their job and protect either team’s players.
Oh yeah, and despite the refs incompetence, it was one of the most fun games I have seen all year.
I am completely okay losing a game like this once in a while in the name of exciting hockey.
And I for one am going to believe Sutter, and think that Kopi got bloodied, but will be okay.

    • I think the problem with the officiating was not blown calls, it was a complete lack of game control.

      Great point and spot on.

    • I described this game to my friend as “complete madness” and I think that’s pretty accurate. Crazy exciting, but it took me 3 hours to cool off from everything that happened and I’m still somewhat upset.

    • You said exactly what I was going to write.

There was Grit (remember the training camp t-shirts? We’re finally showing it the right way.), team spirit, and a wholly “never say die” attitude from top t bottom tonight.

Hated the officiating, hated the outcome, loved the team, and the game.

  2. You’re fine my ass. You may be fine now… And I’m… Finer than I was.

That was a horrible line of words.

I wasn’t that upset about the non call on Drew. I’m the one who told you he gets the call if he doesn’t imbellish it. Way pissed me off about that play was that the Kings let it happen. How about we argue about the second goal (I think) against again… The one where Johnson fucked up then Greene fucked up :)

If wanting Souray suspended is wishful thinking, well, you may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.

I had my conniption during the scrum in OT. I drove home pretty annoyed. I’m going to sleep now using up a lot of energy being fine. I’m very curious how many people I will punch in my dreams and how I will feel when I wake up.

  3. Aside from the first period. This was one of the best and most exciting games of the year. Coming back down 2-0 showed a tremendous amount of character. The type of character we have been lacking for a while. Our PK was strong. Our pp was el fuego. Thats two games in a row 4+ goals scored. We outplayed them the 2nd and 3rd and owned the OT. It’s a hard loss to take especially with the loss of kopi. Hopefully he will be ok. This is the type of game that brings a team closer to rally around their team mate and vault us further in the direction we need to go. Definitely something to continue to build on. Saturday against Calgary should be interesting. They should be comin to this game with some fire

  4. You guys would have love Bob Miller’s call “and here comes Quick…’ I thought for sure a line brawl was about to go down at the of the game. You know Quick would’ve have drop the gloves an a heartbeat.

As for Doughty, he’s getting a bit of a bad rep for his embellishment of calls and his complaining. The officials aren’t giving him the call like they might with other players because of this.He really needs to be taken aside and told to knock it off.

  5. Nice of Dewey to just stand there while his guy (Souray) is giving JW the business. That’s why Quick started coming over. He needed to even things up while Dewey was looking for his wallet.

  6. “Doughty oversold that tripping call. It was a trip but if he just fell, verses dive hard forward, he probably gets that call.”

This is what I 100% thought at first too, but after I watched the replay I saw he was actually reaching out for the puck to sweep it away.

  7. So I currently live in TX, so instead of watching the game through GameCenter Live..I just watched it on TV…I thought I’d share my favorite quote from the Stars’ announcers (and they are nearly as bad as the clowns in Anaheim…but this was legit):

*On Dustin Penner in the 2nd period after losing a 1-on-1 battle for the puck on the boards*:

“Does that guy win a battle EVER?”

    I laughed.

  8. The reason there was no announcement as to the no goal was because of the charging penalty on DD. Because of that, technically the goal never happened as the play is blown dead as soon as Fraser touched the puck (or if it was ruled frozen.

How Souray only gets a “roughing” penalty, and DD gets te misconduct is absurd.

  9. Nicely balanced summary. I hate that shit. I come here looking for a senseless partisan rant and then I have to stuff all my psychoses back into the steamer trunk of logic… Not cool.

Wonder if anybody else heard the Doughty interview with Darryl Sutter post-game. He was happy with the point. I was not. I know I am seen as having a bias against Dougty, in spite of great effort to be fair and even at times generous to him, but if this game wasn’t an example of a time when it needed to be blood and guts yet Doughty was sunshine and rainbows, I don’t know what is.

I saw the Morrow hit as purely clean; hands and stick down, horizontal momentum, initial contact to the shoulder, not even that dramatic lifting follow-thru like a Kronwall hit, for example. Hate to say it, but it looked clean. I have no idea why Kopi isn’t paralyzed, the way he went into the boards was scary as hell.

Something has to be going on with Richards, he has been marshmallow on the puck, not like his usual self at all. First two games after the concussion were real good, since then not good overall. Mad respect for stepping into Morrow, and one final thing…

The difference between the Kings and the piece of shit Stars was when Richards engaged with Morrow, Matt Greene had come flying in to do battle and was right there ready to gang tackle, but instead when Richards was obviously in full fight mode Greene stepped back. That’s the Kings; following the honor code. Second later, Williams is on his freaking back fully engaged and being held down, but Souray starts two fisitng him with punching bag rhythm to the head. That’s the Stars; ignoring any honor code. I am sure the ref scolded Souray briefly, perhaps the ref even went so far as to say he might have made a slight error in judgment and should make an attempt to try to refrain from similar activity if at all possible.

  10. After this game and into the next day. I want to see the Kings and Stars compete in a playoff series. It would be heated, exciting, and gritty. Hopefully the same officials from this game call the best of 7( har har).
