Dean Lombardi’s Big Deadline Move

A trade?! Not in the traditional sense. But a roster move has been made. Jarret Stoll has gone to the IR with a lower body injury, which can only mean his uterus is swollen. In his place comes Anze Kopitar’s favorite linemate, Dwight King and the guy I called for several moons ago, Jordan Nolan.

But before I get to those moves, let’s discuss how one injured forward necessitates replacement by two rookie forwards. Slava Voynov and his waiver exemptedness (I make up words when I’m upset) is AHL bound.

Carrying 8 defensemen, as the Kings have done for most of the season, is generally a silly thing to do, particularly when you don’t rotate your 6th defensemen regularly. Slava Voynov filled in admirably for Drew Doughty when wunderkind went down with a case of the contracts in preseason and then missed a chunk of games with a case of the dizzies a few weeks later.

That spot duty earned Slava the honor of usurping Alec Martinez’ role as 6th defensemen. Slava did so well in fact that he eventually earned himself Jack Johnson’s top 4 spot.

Oh how the times have changed.

I haven’t seen the last 4 games because of various circumstances, so I don’t really know what Voynov did to play himself off the roster. I can’t speak to how good Martinez has been since finally getting another chance to play after an extended forced sabbatical. What I do know is that during this time, Davis Drewiske, the home-grown boy who never complains, has played a whopping 7 games to Voynov’s 33 and Martinez’ 26. Amusingly, Davis has 2 goals in his 7 games, but come on, Scott Parse, who is as healthy as a tumor, has played more games this season than Davis, whose fiddle is quite fit. Is that dirty? It sounds dirty.

Yes yes Drewiske is that reliable guy who always works hard in practice and can be called upon for reasonably astute defensive duty in a pinch. He would probably get picked up on waivers. In a trade he won’t fetch much. Martinez is too good to let go for nothing and the trade deadline action hasn’t picked up quite yet, if you even think trading Martinez is a good idea, which many do not. Still, unless Voynov committed an egregious error I missed, I fumble to find a reason why Drewiske is forcing Voynov out of the roster…. wait, no I don’t. Safety.

The safe move. This move is the equivalent of not activating your defensemen when you are down 2-0 in the third period. It is sending only one man in on the forecheck. It is playing not to lose instead of playing to win. Sending Voynov down is the move that best aligns with a battle plan that mirrors a squirrel harboring nuts for winter. Voynov in Manchester will serve Lombardi’s hibernation at this trade deadline well, as I am more and more convinced it will be an unspectacular affair for the Kings.

But before we ponder this further, we must consider the two gentlemen who are bouncing up and down in their first class airline seats. Dwight King… is big. I know that much about him. I know he is slow. I know he is second on Manchester in scoring, meaning he is Queen of the offensively lame underworld of the Kings organization. I don’t know what to expect from him but I’ll keep as open a mind as a cynic can spread without hurting himself. Nolan, well if you click that link above you’ll know what I think of Nolan. I like this kid and I like him alot. He is intense, his hands are made of a substance softer than stone and his game is fearless. He will fight, he will hit, he will crash the net. Put him on a line with Clifford and Fraser and watch the havoc unfold.

Will any of this solve the Kings’ scoring problems? Of course it won’t. At best I can hope for a small boost in the interim, but the problem we have can not be solved by Dwight King or Jordan Nolan. Still, I am interested to see what young, fierce rookie blood next to Richards can do to help, assuming Sutter doesn’t just throw Lewis to Mike’s right.

Though of course as I type this I see the practice lines are up at the mushroom’s. I’m not going to bother rewriting anything based on the following, as lines are a vaporous thing.

Brown-Kopitar-Williams
King-Richards-Nolan
Clifford-Loktionov-Lewis
Penner-Fraser-Hunter/Westgarth

Scuderi-Doughty
Mitchell-Johnson
Martinez-Greene

So Richardson gets the shaft and Richards goes from playing with two veterans who are expected to score but can’t to playing with two rookies who shouldn’t be expected to score but will be though they probably won’t.

As you can tell, I’m in a stellar mood.

I am excited to see Nolan play in the NHL. Otherwise my hands will remain in this appalled upwardly thrown position in which they seem to be stuck.

  1. After watching this awesome video with awesome music on Hemsky, I WANT HEMSKY! DEAN GET HEMSKY!

He totally undressed Handzus, Regehr and others.

    • I posted that yesterday but don’t tell Scribe… :D

      • Not exactly dude, you posted the one, though a good video, had really gay music.

I think it shows Hemsky is a player not afraid to play physical, go into the dirty areas, and doesn’t avoid contact. That’s most likely the reason for his injuries but for a player like that maybe worth the risk. Could set an example.

        • I don’t even remember the music. The thing that turns me on about Hemsky (yes I understand they’re highlights) is the way he just charges. I think maybe Kopitar has some of those moves but I can’t say anyone else plays with that much abandon, skill and speed. So I’m hoping they bring him over and Sutter just tell him to go balls out. I think Richards would love playing with a guy like that.

Hemsky has that Ovechkin/Kovalchuck style of play to me. No holds barred, excellent vision, sick moves, fast skater and a good shot. DL ain’t gonna do shit though….

          • Yup, I’m eye to eye with you on this one.
Don’t know, really hope Dean pulls it off, we don’t lose Voynov, and Hemsky signs an extension. Would be a perfect winger with Kopitar and Williams.

  2. god forbid we lose DD44 to waiver. the horror…the horror.

for some reason DL thinks we need to keep carrying the likes of DD44 and the p Harrold’s of the world. dean if they can’t crack the line-up and if nobody will make a trade for them, then it’s likely they aren’t worth much. he seems to think keeping guys like this on the roster is akin to holding some great wild cards up his sleeve for trades. well we’ve seen what that has returned – SQUAT.

instead of having some youngsters up with LA and learning from the vets, where they should be. he keeps wiskie (and Harrold last year) up with the club so they can earn frequent flyer miles and get their daily per diem. these guys have had what equates to a fan’s fantasy camp experience that includes actual NHL game time.

DD44 will end up walking the end of next year, just like Harrold did this past summer. only after enjoying another year of mostly sitting in the press box, while the likes of VV, AMart, Muzzin, etc bounce back and forth instead of working with NHL vets.

  3. Oh yeah, hopefully Martinez can get traded for a third and Voynov will be back.
Martinez is too sloppy with the puck, will miss Voynov while he is gone, come back soon Slava.
Oh, fuck King. Man he blows. Would much rather see Vay or Cliche. Doesn’t make any fucking sense. Nolan is an upgrade over Westgarth I guess, I don’t know.

Anyways, best of luck on the rest of this roadtrip.

  4. the entire organization and team at this point have run aground. comparing the Kings to the Costa Concordia isn’t a stretch. the GM’s master 5-year plan is off track. the team is on a new coach, that could possibly turn into a 1/2 season interim situation. the players themselves all season have seemed to be adrift with no direction and little emotion.

for many, myself included, this year’s expectations were high. in most cases entirely to high. i predicted a Pacific division title and either 103 or 105 pts. man was i wrong. how could i or any other fan expect this team literally fail at scoring? they score goals as adeptly; as a 14-year skinny, old, zit faced kid fresh out of middle school has at scoring in a sorority house. it just ain’t happening.

i hope and pray, but when reality returns to my brain i know the chances are slim for this season. there just isn’t enough tequila, scotch or rum stocked in my bar to kill the pain

  5. Kozun, Kozun, Kozun, Kozun. I can understand Voynov being the sacraficial lamb, simply due to being exempt of being put on waivers.
AMART would have to be put on waivers, so Dumbardi has to keep his potential trade bait.
I can’t understand why Sutter wouldn’t go to 7 D and add one more spot for offense.
I am happy Nolan is going to get his first NHL game, he now qualifies for his first rookie card to be put into circulation. I bet his father Ted is happy, and might even attend Jordan’ first NHL game.
FYI: Jordan’ aunt or cousin I believe is married to a neighbor of the Cliffords in Ayr. The Harts live 3 houses away from Deb and John Clifford.
I would love to see a line of Nolan/Fraser/Clifford, but it would have been much better if it could have been a 3rd line of Simmonds/Fraser/Clifford.
Hopefully as much as I have grown to dislike Stoll who is only usefull as a shootout specialist , returns quickly. He is the lesser of the 2 evils and they need his experience to help with the playoff race.
It is apparent that even the novice hockey fan who bought into all the hype in the pre-season about how the Kings were now a legit contender, who believed those bus banners “Our Time is Now” are now realizing this Ponzi scam.
Hopefully, Lombardi can pull that rabbit out of his ass and get this team a sniper, and the quicker the better.

  6. Hey hey hey…it’s Faaaaattt Allllbeeerrrrttttt….Pancakes to the Leafs? How bout giving us Kessel for this fine specimen of a player. He’s got size, good hands, relatively quick (that’s compared to a mule) And he’s won a cup with the GM before in Anaslime. Sure Kessel is a goal scoring machine but they need size up front. Pull the trigger Burke!

    http://www.thestar.com/sports/leafs/article/1129281–reality-check-dustin-penner-and-the-maple-leafs-trade-rumour-of-the-day

    • Trade Pancakes for Grabvoski. Unfortunetly if the Leafs or Kings make the playoffs, neither would happen.

Grabovski is more important to Toronto if they make the playoffs. He will hit the 20 goal mark very soon.

I heard Kulemin as a rumor also, but he isn’t putting up the same numbers as he did last season, and unfortunetly he is a young player, a RFA after this season.

It would take an offer like Lowe made for Penner, which forced the Ducks to let him go. Burke isn’t stupid.

    • Also is one the best (and most persistent) backhand passers in the league. Get him while he’s hot!

    • Maybe only if Doughty +Vegetable Pancackes was involved in the deal could we maybe obtain Kessel. Though still I doubt Toronto makes that trade considering Kessel is like 60% of. their offence and everythink they gave up for him. On top of that Doughty really isn’t a superstar player anymore so it would take a lot more I think to land an elite sniper like that.

  7. Pancakes is Garbage! Even Sutter is basically saying that. It’s clearly obvious that the guy does not want to be in LA. I don’t think he ever did. All that bullshit about doing his lunges and how hard he’s been working out, getting in shape is all just Kings propanganda bullshit to hype up the season. Dean get rid of the slob asap for someone that can Really play!!!

  8. does anyone else miss handzus as much as i do?

  9. Fuckin Stoll!!!!!!!

You are the definition of ” Worthless “….in my dictionary there’s not a picture of you next that word…..noooooo….there is a link to every fucking shift you’ve taken for the last 40 games…..WWWaaaaaaaaaa……I got benched for Sucking…..wwaaaaaaaaa……somebody please pull this worthless assistant coach…I mean Tampon…out of my sore little pussy…!!!!!!!

Your only Value!!!! Was that some stupid east coast team was going to overpay us for a change….for a 4th line Depth face off specialist, that could help them in the playoff’s!!!!

You Know this is gonna happen…..Mr. Sutter has shown you the video clips of this guy who built a new house in Manhattan Beach, moved his almost as worthless, but clearly is trying, teammate in, so he could show off his incredible wardrobe to…..Sounds like a Bitch..!!!! Mr. Sutter has moved you COMPLETELY into new territories, not for your own good….but to get you going!!!! And now, that your erectile disfunction has arrived 10 years too soon, you turtle and play hurt, so you don’t have to pack up your expensive clothes and accept a trade to a playoff contender, and really expose how pathetic a hockey player you’ve become……I was always a fan!!!!! Even when you shot the puck into the glass 9 out of 10 times for the last 3 1/2 years, carried the puck up on the powerplay and couldn’t connect a pass…then killing most of our own powerplay time for the other team…all the stupid offensive zone penalties in the closing minutes, Yes a Fan…
But….this season….with all the glaring underpreforming, overpaid, ego’s on this team..You Mr. Stoll…..If They are Shit…you are the Corn….

Thanks to you and Quick we made it to the playoffs despite losing Kopi last season…..but that guy Handzus gave us everything he had, During!!!!the games.
The fact that we let him go, and held onto a Decroded piece of crap like you…..
    Go fuck yourself Stoll

  10. UGH i can’t beat that!

… Well, there’s always this little nugget from Helene Elliott, responding to someone on twitter:

Helene: when i talked to him monday he was already talking about next season and cap space he gains July 1 to make moves. draw your own conclusion

  12. Go fucking get em Jordie……the Nolan kid is gonna shock and awe the fucking league!!!!!!!

Then I woke up and realized, Jamie Kompon is coaching him……..

    • Hopefully Tampon will get his fucking walking papers right after the whole team gang bangs his wife on the team plane without protection, so he doesn’t know who’s kid it is!!!!!

  13. Ashamed to be a Kings fan… once again.

  14. Dont be a kings fan then pussy^

  15. Do you know who else I miss?
Alexei Ponikarovsky, yes I said it.
He has helped New Jersey a bunch since he left the black hole called Carolina.
He would be a huge improvement over Dustin “Fucking” Penner and cost us less money!!!

  16. Do you know the difference between Jaime Kompon and a bucket of shit?
    The bucket!!
