Top 10 Things Lombardi Will Say At The Trade Deadline

Dean Lombardi is pretty damn unpredictable, particularly when it comes to trades. More predictable is how we as fans will feel about his player management at the trade deadline. Aside from Fredrik Modin, he has yet to make a deadline deal that we have looked at either at the time or in retrospect with positivity. Needless to say I have little confidence other than the unyielding naive hope I carry with me as a permanent installation to the gallery of my passion for the Kings. That naiveté must at times give way to rationalization for my humanity to remain intact and in turn that rationality needs be tempered with humor so as to not be consumed by contempt.

So I wonder what will happen at the deadline. Not that I think anything Lombardi CAN do in terms of trades at this stage will be distilled into an effective panacea, I nonetheless find myself pondering the benefits of a major shake-up. Truly I have no idea what I think should happen, I only know what I want to happen and what I want is for the Kings to score more goals. As how to best achieve that goal, be it trade or stand pat and hope for the tides to turn, I can only shrug my shoulders, laugh and then cry.

So in speculating as to what may be Lombardi’s last words on the trade deadline as GM of the Kings, join me and mirror my smirks while we wade through our tears.

The Top 10 Things Lombardi Will Say At The Trade Deadline.

10. “Jay Pandolfo brings that experience on defense this team needs for the playoffs. Andrei is a fine young player and I wish him the best on the Islanders, but we all know defense wins championships.”

9. “This is a deep draft and any first round pick is like a top 10 pick in other years so we needed that room to move up and down the board. There are a lot of good defensemen coming through and we felt this was a good opportunity to get the best value for Jack Johnson so we sent him to Chicago for the first round pick this season and a second the next. Now we have more options as we go through the second phase of our 12 year rebuild,”

8. From Hammond:

(thoughts on the trade)

Lombardi: “(Sometimes) players get (taken out of the lineup). It’s (good) vanReimsdyk got (11 goals) this year (and) the (beast) has a (strong work ethic). (a player) and (a pick) was a (wonderful) trade for us and (yes, just wonderful).”

Meanwhile, the real quote was…

8. “All players get injured. It’s unfortunate vanReimsdyk got hurt this year but the kid has a bright future. Voynov and our 1st was a good trade for us and filled a need.”

7. “Sure Jeff Carter went to the Ducks for Nick Bonino and a 4th rounder, but in the end we just had to look at the fit. Does Carter fit? We didn’t think so. We have to do what’s right for our cap and Trevor Lewis, we know he fits, and we just didn’t want to part with him in exchange for Carter.”

6. “We clearly needed some offense and Nash was the best player out there. Originally the deal was just Doughty for Nash but we had to throw in our 1st after Hammond caved in to the pressure from Surly and Scribe and broke the news before it was official.”

5. “We’ve been working on this deal for a while and we’re thrilled to have Penner here for another 3 years at only $3.5 million per season.”

4. “It’s tough to give up a player like Kopi, but this guy has won a Cup and has a lot left in the tank. We’ve wanted him on the Kings for a long time and the timing was finally right. We are proud to bring Lecavalier to our franchise.”

3. “It was time to go in a different direction. Brownie gave us some great years but there is a reason Tuomo is so coveted. Ruutu has a lot of offensive upside and together with Chad LaRose bring a ton of compete. ”

2. “Sometimes it takes 3 teams to make a deal. Man, that Parise, hell of a player. To be honest I’m shocked Lou traded him. Bernier and Johnson though, tough to give up. New Jersey and Detroit got better today and so did we. It’s a good hockey deal all the way around. Dan Cleary is just an old fashioned and solid hockey player and he fits with our core group here and hopefully Bertuzzi will make the long term commitment to Los Angeles.”

1. “Rich, take the rest of the day off.”

  1. haha, #8 especially

  2. It’s funny, I always thought, “I’m the only guy who thinks Hammond is a complete tool!”

  3. “Now we have more options as we go through the second phase of our 12 year rebuild”

holy shit I cant breathe, your killin me larry

  4. Like christmas comes every year you can always count on Dean to do something stupid. As Sting said in his hit song Free free set him free

  5. Has to be one of the best top ten lists I’ve ever heard/read.

Pure genius paralleled with pure misery….

The Kings played a great game against the Coyotes but, tonight, only victory will bring me back from the dark depths…

  6. While funny, to me it was very frightening! I am sure that at the very least 3 of those scenarios can actually happen, and I feel confident one will :(

  7. That Lecavalier one… You guys are bad man… Im hyperventilating.

  8. I honestly wish Lombardi would just go all in for once.

Jarret Stoll to Philadelphia for a 2nd round pick.

Dustin Penner to Toronto for nothing.

Jack johnson, Jonathan Bernier, Matt Greene, Dwight King, Oscar Moller, 1st round pick, PHI 2nd round pick to Columbus for Rick Nash, Jeff Carter, Grant Clitsome.

Rick Nash – Anze Kopitar – Justin Williams
Jeff Carter – Mike Richards – Dustin Brown

Now that’s a top 6 you can beat anyone with.

Why cant Dean just fucking do it? If it doesnt work out, everyone who missed out on Rick Nash will still want him, and we can just trade Nash for a similar package we got him with. And Jeff Carter we will still be able to at least give away.

Why not just do that? The offense has been so bad for so long, why not just, once and for all, make a move that is guaranteed to fix that problem? No matter what else happens, at the very least you at least know the Kings will be able to score goals when you add two 40 goal scorers with complete goal scoring skill sets?

It would work cap wise, cant he just do something big like that, something ballsy, for once? Clitsome doesnt have the ceiling of JJ, but hes actually a solid two-way dman right now and could step in, the Kings wouldnt even lose much on D right now (JJ obviously has better potential for the future). You would be adding two 40 goal scorers basically without losing anything valuable off the roster. Clitsome replaces Johnson just fine, hes a good player, you dont need Stoll when you have Carter…

Wish he would just do that.

    • I like your trade, I put up a similar one on another post. I would just sub out JJ and Green for Loktionov or Voynov. I’d be for trading green, just not JJ, unless its JJ + 1, not JJ and Bernier. And I would want Mason coming back to us as a backup. I think Nash’s cap hit is high but its really only 300k more than other guys of that calibre. I know the knock is he’s not putting up the numbers to deserve that kind of money but I think playing with a good center like Kopitar or Richards, he’d be putting up at least 40 goals. The guy is what Penner should be, he can literally run people over.

As long as we can re-sign Quick with enough cap space Id be for it. I’d do it because I dont think we are gonna be able to get Parise in free agency. And then we’d be fucked having not improved the top 6 and losing out on another high end player. I also think Parise’s cap hit is gonna be at least 7.5 mil on the new deal.

I think the price is probably too high for Nash right now and that is why nothing is happening. But closer to the deadline The BJs will realize they dont have many takers since the teams he has on his list wont have the cap room or won’t be willing to alter chemistry and lose roster players.

But if Nash goes to the Rangers, Leafs, Philly or the Sharks, its really gonna reinforce the MO that Lombardi can’t pull the trigger on big deals.

  9. First off I know it prob won’t happen but if either Doughty or Kopi get dealt, I’m gonna dig someones heart out with a rusty spoon lol jk. Second off, even though he’s old and far past his time, I would love to see Bertuzzi crack just one head wearing the ol’ black and silver hahahahaha

  10. Fuck you flames! Majestic foam should do the trick….

  11. ” The biggest mistake that everybody made with this group was the expectations, because they lost in the first round last year. Well, you know what, that’s got nothing to do with anything.’’

That’s a quote today from Sutter and I agree with it, the expectations, the posters all over town and the ads on fox sports about how the time is now and we’re gonna compete for the cup this year, it’s all bullshit and marketing hype.
It was a big mistake to hype the team this much.

    • the expectations, the posters all over town and the ads on fox sports about how the time is now and we’re gonna compete for the cup this year, it’s all bullshit and marketing hype.
It was a big mistake to hype the team this much.

… Of course it was. But remember how many people bought the hype? The marketing plan worked pretty well.

      • For some of us the marketing plan had nothing to do with it. It was the acquisition of Richards coupled with an earnest expectation for Kopi and Brownie and Doughty to take another step forward.

I think the marketing plan piggy backed off of fan and pundit expectations.

      • Yep every time I hear the attendance at the game I think about how many people bought it and it sucks because I fear those “new” fans won’t stick around. For us long time fans, at least to me it’s awesome that our building is full. To me it’s a fuck you to all of the pundits who write off our “market”. So I’m pissed we aren’t taking advantage of the support and putting up some god damn goals.

Surly, yeah I was psyched we finally had a beast of 2nd C in Richards. Thought we’d be much improved, not a contender but improved. I didn’t put much into the Gagne signing since it was obvious the guy was on his last leg, one career ending hit away. Meanwhile the marketing machine was jerkin off that we signed Gagne, like he was last years rocket Richard winner.

  12. Once again for our beloved team to win, Quick will have to pitch a shutout! Yes I referenced a baseball game….

Come on, boys you can do it!

    • Incorrect. Since the beginning of hockey (and I don’t have the exact historical information) you have to score at least one goal to actually win a game.

  13. The fat lady is warming up her vocal cords…Kings, exit stage left in 3…2…

  14. So clearly S&S have a time machine because this is the kind of vomit DL is going to be spewing out of his bullshitting yap on trade day. SIX years motherfucker, SIX years to build a CONTENDER. While you’re digging in your nose other teams have retooled, rebuilt, retweaked and either won a cup or are right in the thick of the race.

Take your fucking pie graphs and shove em’ straight up your ass…just another lawyer who likes to hear his own bullshit. I’d be shocked if the guy didn’t have a mirror in front of his desk so he can watch himself wax poetic about his philosophy on dot to board play.
Bring on the next rebuild…Jesus christ.

  15. I’ve pissed my depends, because that is brutally hysterical and brutally honest!

You earned it Trevor, and Tuomo, and Dustin.

You’ve addressed that “French” issue by bringing in Vinny.

    Jacques Martin welcome to LA.

  16. S&S, you guys, there are times when this site is a bit over the edge. It’s not a criticism. You guys are aware of that and you have your own distinct approach. But I’ve gotta confess that you also offer up some really good laughs.

Surly, that’s funny stuff. At least I hope it’s funny and that funny doesn’t turn into reality.
