Kings vs. San Jose Sharks Open Forum: Opportunity Knocks

When you have won four in a row and remain outside the top 8, you realize there is a lot of work still ahead. When you look at the standings and see you are 1 point before the 1st place team in the division, you appreciate the work’s coming reward.

Work. Like the last four games, it must be hard and smart. Great defense & an equally productive offense are not mutually exclusive. 1-0, 3-2, 4-0 or 5-4, the Kings must be able to win any and all of these types of games. Suffocate & score. That’s our motto.

Interesting comment from Willie Mitchell:

MITCHELL: “I’ve enjoyed Darryl since he has come in. He’s a good coach. He’s a smart coach. He’s demanding, there’s no doubt about it, but he gets it. He gets systems, gets playing the games, gets that it’s not just about running a system and sticking to your routes, like maybe in football. There is some read-and-react that goes on, and it allows the guys to make their own reads. I think that has brought a little bit more offense to our team, as you’re starting to see. We’re starting to get a little more comfortable.”

Draw your own conclusions. Terry Murray doesn’t coach here anymore so no sense pissing on his symbolic grave.

The Sharks lost. They started with Niemi and ended with Greiss. Who do we get tomorrow? Strangely, I don’t care. Don’t give a shit about the Sharks. Bring either of them. They should be worried about us.

Helene Elliott gave us a beauty during the Sharks vs. Ducks game:

We don’t have the luxury to take a single night off, to take any opponent lightly, to bring anything less than the will to play 60 minutes of balanced hockey in all three zones.

Suffocate.

Score.

Win.

  1. Am I posting in outer space?

    I thought I said . . .

We can do ourselves some good Tuesday.

For Chrissakes, let us not skate over our dicks.

    • Goddamn it Tuan even though our dicks are long enough to do that, they are made of titanium and the only thing that would happen is we would slightly dull our skates while making blinding sparks that awe the skaters and confuse the goalie. No worry, man, we got this.

    • Not quite with Phoenix playing Dallas tonight. Any bets on that game going OT?

  2. The Sharks lost. They started with Niemi and ended with Greiss. Who do we get tomorrow? Strangely, I don’t care. Don’t give a shit about the Sharks. Bring either of them. They should be worried about us.

… Maybe I’m being too confident and tempting fate here, but I feel the same way. At this particular point in time, I think the Kings are ready for anyone. Bring whoever you want. And if the Kings do happen to get in the playoffs, I think I’ll have the same feeling – I don’t care who they play. The matchups that went on earlier in the season are invalid now; this team has almost a completely different look than it did in the early stages or the middle of this season.

    • Ignoring us, I’m wondering if/when SJ has a rebound or if they’re just down for the count. It seems odd to me.

Anyway, I’d like to see a division title leading to a matchup against Chicago for the first round. I think we have the best chance against them AND it would be very entertaining. I think I’d take Vancouver for a second choice. Shot at redemption, entertaining, and I also really like our chances against them as well. Dallas wouldn’t be bad if they stay broken, however, if they’re in good form I think it would be a brutal series for both teams, complete with possible injuries for both sides. I just feel like a nasty rivalry has been slowly developing with Dallas, which is good in its own right, but I’m not sure we want to go through that on the first round–but this matchup seems rather unlikely to me. I DON’T want to see round 1 versus STL. Even with our improved scoring I still fear having to sit through 7 games of 1-0.

      • Yeah, I also feel given S.L , Chi or Dallas, Dallas or Chi is the better match.
Hard to tell if the Sharks are done however it does appear that the Sharks lost focus since acquiring Winnik and Galiardi.

      • I think we have the best chance against them AND it would be very entertaining.

… Which World do you live in where the Kings being in the playoffs wouldn’t be entertaining in itself? Seriously?

Even with our improved scoring I still fear having to sit through 7 games of 1-0.

… If the Kings win four of those seven 1-0 games, I’ll be a very happy man.

I’m not one of those who thinks that hockey is somehow less entertaining if there isn’t a set amount of goals scored. The Blues are very well-coached, and I love how they play the game. As far as I’m concerned, shutting an opponent down is just as exciting as scoring on them.

        • I was just ranking what I thought would be better for the first round, not saying at all I wouldn’t be entertained by my Kings in the playoffs.

I can appreciate the technical merits to how the Blues play. But put them against the Kings and you can get into a shut down versus shut down situation. You don’t need scoring for exciting hockey but I do think you need a certain amount of movement and quality chances. Most people like hockey because it’s the fastest sport out there. And yes, I would be ecstatic if the Kings nabbed 4 of those 1-0 games.

          • You don’t need scoring for exciting hockey but I do think you need a certain amount of movement and quality chances. Most people like hockey because it’s the fastest sport out there.

… Honestly, I don’t think you’d need to worry about intensity or guys going as hard and fast as they possibly can. When you’re talking about a Kings/Blues matchup, there might not be much in the way of chances when compared to other games, but looking at the Kings and how they’ve been scoring since the trade deadline and how their team is structured at the present, I think they’ll be able to create some offense. But as far as I’m concerned, I enjoy the hell out of games where guys have to fight through other guys to get chances and grind it out. I see breaking through the Blues’ D as a tremendous challenge, and I’m curious to see if the Kings are up for that challenge.

          • I completely agree and it’s been difficult to adjust. This definitely is a different team and sometimes I catch myself expecting the worst. But, there’s new feel now. I don’t know how to explain it but I actually am starting to believe they can live up to the hype of the beginning of the season. Also, from a purely selfish standpoint, I would love to see the Kings vs. Blues (or Chicago) but just because I live a few hours from both cities and would be able to take in some playoff hockey in hostile territory.

        • “… If the Kings win four of those seven 1-0 games, I’ll be a very happy man.
          I’m
with you. I remember the 1-0 and 2-1 games of the Pulford era…amazingly exciting.

    • “this team has almost a completely different look than it did in the early stages or the middle of this season”

      Yes.

And we’ve gone a long way to rectify the SIZE deficiency that marked the difference between the Kings of January 1012 and the Kings of April 2011.

But we’re facing a Moment of Truth: The “old” Kings — entering a home game on a hot streak, facing an important divisional rival that’s been spanked the night before and has to travel hundreds of miles to play a back-to-backer — THOSE “old” Kings would lose this game tonight.

That must not happen. San Jose is bent over, presenting its ass to us like a Goddamn baboon, virtually begging us to jam our dick to the root up its alimentary canal. We need FULL PENETRATION NOW!

  3. For once Helene got her hockey story nailed.

She was right the sharks are (have) dicks.

    Go Kings Go….

Kick the Sharks in their claspers nuts!!!

    http://www.marinebiodiversity.ca/shark/english/images/anatomymale.jpg

    • Except she referred to the Ducks as Dicks not the Sharks.

      • Another good one was the previous Ducks game where Hayward tried to say “piece” and said “piss” instead. It was about “may have got a piece of…” some guy, I think, like a shot got a piece of a guy, but it was clearly said as piss and then he corrected himself as he and Ahlers were suppressing giggles.

  4. Finally within striking distance of 1st and what the fuck, Dallas v Phoenix on the same night?!?! You godda be shitting me!

    • And, Colorado and Calgary playing each other. Three games, six teams fighting for the same three spots. You gotta wonder if the schedule gods are playing a cruel trick on us.

  5. Speaking about Willie Mitchell:

I sent this to him tonight so that he does an encore tomorrow…

    GO KINGS GO!

  6. Low scoring hockey isn’t boring. As long as the kings win it’s all good.

  7. I am looking for some shark BBQ on the barbie tonight…

    Go Kings Go!

  8. This is what Mitchell needs to do tonight. He did it before and he can do it again.

    Go Kings Go!

  9. As I said earlier, the Sharks ought to be tired on a long trip down I-5 on their team bus.

  10. Gentleman, I’M in desperate need of hockey substance. I dont think I can hold out until 730pm. How about a semi (haha) hockey 2.0 article on willie mitchell’s comments and Sutter’s allowance of offensive freedom? Far bse it for me to tell you vine gentlemen what to and when to write. I will take a picture of my penis and itI can be your muse. Help out a loyal reader I do.n’t think I can make it until 730 pm. I now must roof my cousins house for free. Help? Player X? Anyone?

    • Hmmm…part of me wants to hold out to see if you will explode just to see what kind of a mess it makes. Another part of me wants to help. I am conflicted.

      • Mess equals Kessler and top ramen. I will at least drag myself to a Duck fan and make my mess on that hideous jersey and human.

    • I was on board until the “picture of the penis” offer. Perhaps if you had promised NOT to take that picture…But I do have the headline for you:

WILLIE MITCHELL, GOAL-SCORING MACHINE, CREDITS NEW COACH SUTTER WITH REVIVING HIS OFFENSIVE TOUCH.

Willie Mitchell, the coveted offensive dynamo trapped inside a defenseman’s body was signed as a free agent by the Kings but then was forced to languish under Coach Murray, where his considerable scoring talents were subjected to slow erosion and outright degradation. Once projected to be the next Bobby Ore (not Orr of the Bruins, Ore, the one that played for the Windsor Shit-fires) Mitchell slowly fizzled into a simple stay at home D’man until the arrival of Saint Sutter Of Offensia.

      Sumpin’ like ‘at?

  13. I too noticed that the Sharks took some Greissed dick in the back last night. I can’t wait for the Kings to take them dry tonight!

Is it time to drop the puck yet?!?! 3 PM? WTF?! Is this the longest day ever?!

  14. Ah, there is a lot of genital talk going on here for some reason, because I suppose people are really pumped up over the Dicks beating the Sharks last night.

Anyway, I will put my two cents into the pot about the Sharks and genitals.

  15. From my point of view, this is the best way for the Kings to deal with the Sharks tonight.

Kings, please don’t miss the target…

    GO KINGS GO!

  16. Okay everyone, if a fight breaks out like this one from yesterday, I want to see some serious damage to the Sharks.

There has to be some bad blood here tonight—what you think?

    GO KINGS GO!

  17. Hell, ya! I have the house to myself with enough alcohol to kill a bear and silence to enjoy the entire game.

    Lets go, boys!

  18. Coyotes and Stars are in OT. Ain’t that a bitch!

  19. If the Kings lose in regulation, they will lose ground on all five teams they are chasing.

Typical. Bettman is one excited man. Three point games everywhere.

  20. Next goal wins

  21. Fuck Yeah!!!

  22. Oh man… Kings were okay the first half of the 2nd, but holy shit did they crush it the second half.

  23. To be honest, I was just cursing Kopitar for not being aggressive enough….then he snipes it in….nice shot Kopitar!

  24. Damn!

  25. Kopitar is just killing shit lately

  26. Nice!

  27. Wtf!?! Pancakes scored again? Holy shit

  28. I am Diggin the attitude of the squad lately. Straight up punk rock thrash metal

  29. Amazing win! Believe boys!

    So….
    should we resign penner?

  30. what a great time to gel!!! fun as shit to watch!….been yelling at the TV for the last three hours…but in a good way!

  31. santa josita sharkees came to STAPLES and the KINGS body slammed them and threw them like rag dolls up and over into a downtown LA crack house like cheap trash.

GO KINGS GO TO PACIFIC DIVISION CHAMPS!!!!

  32. McLellan in his post game interview tells silicon valley fish wrap papers tonight that his team played like crap, like old women, where the team was totally dismantled and shattered by the KING troops. McLellan went on to say that his team is busted and dead money and have flushed their season down the toilet. He said the loss last night by the Dicks was bad enough, but tonight was devastating and season ending as his team are mental basket cases where they are being put on max dose of prozac to get them ready for next year.

  33. I am so giddy I cannot help myself. My dog even ate a shark for dinner tonight….

    GO KINGS GO!

  34. I watched both Sharks games the last two nights. They look old, tired and out of shape.

I live in San Jose so I have to watch the Sharks broadcast. Randy Hahn is one of the worst announcers in the game. Huge homer. Luckily Drew Remenda got the night off or I’d have to listen to his amazing bias as well. Hahn and Bret Hedican-Yamaguchi were literally making things up in the second period to try and mask the absolutely awful effort that they put in. I didn’t see a single Sharks forward back-check the entire period. It was like watching my D-league team play the 3rd period when we only have 8 skaters for the night.

I really think it’s rebuild time for the Sharks. Boyle and Murray looked so slow. Marleau, Mitchell, Pavelski and Thornton were basically invisible tonight. The Kings now have a two win cushion on the tiebreaker with the Sharks. That’s a really good spot to be in right now. The Sharks basically need three extra points to pass the Kings. I like our chances big-time.

Buying tickets to the last game of the season. Perfect scenario for the night, Kings wrap up first in the Pacific and the Sharks get knocked out of the playoffs on the same night.

  35. The Sharks were tuckered out in the third. I think the back-to-back really ground their asses into soot. (And Niemi shoulda stopped that Penner goal.)

Not that I’m sympathetic. San Jose didn’t exactly send us a consoling Hallmark card when Kopi went down just before last year’s playoffs. It’s gratifying for us — who have one of the worst fucking schedules in the league — to take advantage of the OTHER poor sunuvabitch when he’s up against it.

I hope we keep putting up ROWs, but I’ll take points any way we can get ‘em. The race is too fucking tight to get fussy about it.

Shit that didn’t go into the net for us last month is going in now. It’s fun to get a bit of luck on our offense.

May our streak go on for twenty-five games.
