LA Kings @ New Jersey Devils Stanley Cup Finals Game 2 Open Forum – The More Things Change

Oh, game two of the Stanley Cup Finals, is that it?

The Kings are up 1-0 on the road you say?

Tonight they could go home to Los Angeles up 2-0… For the fourth time in a row?

A guy could get used to this.

So much has been written (finally) about the Kings. Both teams had jitters this, the ice was crappy that. Kovalchuk WILL be better. OK, so will Doughty. The Devils will make a strong push. They push against a solid wall.

I have not heard of any lineup changes as of 3am on the East Coast. The Kings needn’t make any and they would not solve what few problems the Devils have. This is a good team we are playing. One that was a whiff or three away from taking game one. But the hockey gods do not act chaotically. The Kings earned their overtime victory for resilience and opportunism.

Was game one truly a trial run? Were both teams suffering from a caterwaul of nerves? Will we see a vastly different game than the last?

I don’t think so. I believe there will be a few more quality chances for each team, but overall we will see the same type of hard forechecking, neutral zone intensive game. Breakouts and zone entry will favor the Kings. Puck recovery and speed around the boards will favor the Devils.

The game favors the Kings, for one critical reason; defense. Our defense will own theirs. Bryce Salvador is the poorest of Willie Mitchells. Anton Volchenkov is an overpaid Greene. Peter Harrold will be Slava Voynov when steroids are legalized and Marek Zidlicky holds a small candle to Drew Doughty, a candle that incinerates before it has the chance to melt.

Still, the Devils will again pose a formidable challenge. They must win a game on their home ice or the solemn sight of a Cupless summer will begin to crystallize in their minds. Winning one of the first two games on home ice is one shade above the bare minimum for utter failure.

The Kings have red marker poised in hand.

An X here. A slashed O there. The promise of a game three played in Los Angeles for a third win.

For this, for posterity of poise, relentlessness of intimidation and soundness of system, we pray.

In the name of the Captain, the Son of Philly and the Holy Goalie.

Glory be to the Captain,
And to the Son of Philly,
And to the Holy Goalie
As it was in the beginning, is now,
And ever shall be,
Playoffs with the Cup end. Amen.

Bless us Oh Hockey Gods, and these thy gifts, which we are about to receive, from thy bounty, through LA Kings, Our Team. Amen.

Blessed are You, Kings our Team and Team of our fathers, Team of Dionne, Team of Luc and Team of Gretzky, the great, mighty and awesome Team, exalted Team, who bestows bountiful goals, who creates all wins, who remembers the insanity of the fans, and who, in love, brings a redeemer to their fans’ children, for the sake of Our Kings.

In hockey heavens who is great? Thou Kings art great!
On ice who is great? Thou Kings art great!
When thy voice resounds in hockey heaven, the hockey gods fall prostrate!
When thy voice resounds on ice, the NHL kiss the snow!

Peace be upon no New Jersey fan, without mercy or blessing of Kings.

Holy Sutter, Holy Stevens;
We give you thanks
that your Schemes, Attitude and Leadership
Are manifest with Power and Pressure
throughout all zones,
within all lines,
and we accept your Tutelage now,
in defense and forecheck.

I pray to the wunderkind, the play-maker, destroyer of all cap space, the enemy of forwards, of great brilliance, the descendent of Orr and of Borque, the one who shines like the Dewey flower.

I invoke and call upon thee O Father Mitchell,
Lord of long stick, Master of all lanes and gaps.
I invite you to the blue line;
Defend it, sustain it, make it home.

Blessed is he who is The Piece for the sake of wholeness.

As it was,
As it is,
As it shall be
O Thou Carter
Of goals!
With the forehand
With the backhand
O Thou Carter
Of goals!
With the forehand
With the backhand

Our Rookies, King of steadfastness, strengthened Nolan, Voynov foothold, support us against the disdainful people.

I profess myself a Penner-worshipper, a Pennercakean, having vowed it and professed it. I pledge myself to the well-played puck, I pledge myself to the well-delivered hit, I pledge myself to the well-fed monster.

Let us know victory.
For as long as the skates shall glide,
For as long as the chemistry shall flow,
For as long as the goal light shall shine,
For as long as the confidence shall grow,
Let us know victory.

Voices above,
Voices of Fans,
Yell from your couch or barstool;
Voices below,
LA King’s Inner-voices,
Speak from the dreams of childhood;
So may our playoffs be beautiful.

I think over again our regular season.
Our fears,
Those small games that seemed so big,
For all the vital wins
We had to get and reach.
And yet there is only one great win,
The only win,
To live to see the great day that dawns
And the silver light that fills the Cup.

Our Kings, who art in New Jersey
Hallowed be thy game.
Thy kingdom come, thy wills be done
On their ice as it was in thy first three rounds.
Give us this day our daily goals, and forgive no Devil their transgressions
As we pound into submission those who trespass against us.
And lead us past this final round,
Past these evil Devil fucks.

Hail Kopi, full of grace, the fans are with thee.
Blessed art thou amongst players and blessed are the fruit of thy skills, goals.
Holy Kopi, dominant of centers, play for us sinners,
Now until the hour of our Cup.

Go fucking nuts.

  1. I think most who watched might agree that game 1 was not the best effortby either team. Partly on Final jitters and mostly due to the humidity. I heard the CBC commentator state that Carter and Kopitar said it was the hottest bldg they’d ever played in and that the humidity gave them the ‘heavy legs’ effect. That really made a difference, even in the bounces the puck was taking due tothe humidty in the bldg affecting the ice
That won’t happen today it’s mid 70’s and cool, tonight should be much better climate

I agree about the Kings D, esp in the phsyicality side. They are bigger and hit harder and will wear the Devils down

I thought Nolan was outstanding in Game 1, the best forward thru 2 periods by far . I was glad to see he didn’t have a case of rookie in the finals nerves. He used his size , speed and agility very well. I really like this kid and hope he sees time on the 3rd line next year. Would love to hav ehim and King on the same line.

I think the Kings will come out (as I’m sure the Devils will) with both guns blazing in the 1st. Should be a great 1st period. I really have a good feeling that they recognize (and Im sure Sutter is making sure of that) the power and position they would be in if they win game 2.

I have a feeling Doughty will have a HUGE game tonight. He has the talent, balls and ability to be a game changer.

Game 1 victors in the Cup Finals have won the cup 79% of the time. I tink if they go up 2 -0 you can start the parade planning.

Go Kings…burn those Devils at the stake

    • On a side note, Did anybody watch the Hatfields and McCoys on the History channel? I thought it was excellent, best tv I’ve seen in sometime. Bill paxton and Kevin Costner were great (as were all of the cast). I saw the first 2 parts on On Demand and will be watching part 3 today.

  2. If and when the Kings win the Cup I hope it happens:,0,1345159.story Wouldn’t be live, but it we’d still get a call from the HOF voice of the Kings.

  3. Now that the Kings reached and started the SC Finals, it is amazing to see the widespread location of King fans around the USA and Canada. Even at the Prudential Center there are King fans showing up from so many different places.

I ran across this video out of the home town of Willie Mitchell where the town now is behind Willie and the Kings. The town is located at Port McNeill Vancouver Island.

We have also seen the other home towns for Dwight King and Dustin Penner go crazy for their home town heros.

All of this intense and widespread fan support has been awesome and so effective to help the team
become revived up and juiced up to play championship style hockey. We have heard the players in so many interviews give credit to the fans being there and so supportive.

So that is our X-Factor, the best fans from far and wide sending out good karma to the team.

    GO KINGS GO!!!

  4. Amen! Go KINGS Go!

Side note—-Words can’t even describe the feelings I have had over the last two months. Thank you both for posting your prayers and insights. Awesome.

  5. Enjoy another STEI667 impact Go Kings video:

    GO KINGS GO!!!

  6. Is it me, or is everybody becoming a little to overconfident? We cannot overlook this team. This series will be a dogfight. Tonight scares me. We all want the cup so bad, I will be devastated if we piss this chance away. I don’t mean to sound like a pessimist, but I am a lifetime Kings fan, and this franchise has driven me close to insanity…

  7. I say we have earned the right to be confident about our team. Overconfidence has not been the theme that I see on these boards. The team needs our confidence, support, and enthusiasm, because we know they are appreciating all of this support. They have told us all the time in interviews that they are grateful for the great fan support, etc, etc.

Everybody knows that on any given day a pro team can beat an opponent, whether it may be an upset or not. The bottom line is that the Kings are doing their level best to not be beaten. In fact they are taking it to the opponents and producing record breaking wins.

The team is clicking, cohesive, and in great spirits from all we can see from the media releases. They achieved so many great victories this entire hockey season against the top elite teams, so that they know what it takes and how to win.

    GO KINGS GO!!!

  8. Let’s go boys, work hard tonight!

  9. DD Baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Ahhhhhh mennnn

  11. Diving motherfuckets. doty….beautiful!!!

  12. Pedal to the metal now! Leave no doubt.

  13. Damn that was a hook!

  14. Anyone else feeling the ghosts of 93? This is amazingly eerie…Hopefully a different outcome in OT. The refs are awful tonight. I don’t mind them swallowing the whistle but be consistent.

    • Hopefully the same OT outcome as last night when it was actually the same players and teams in the game! Also, how did the refs miss those two boardings with 5:30 left & 5:15 left on Richie & Brownie respectively?

  15. F##K YEAH! 2-0 BaBeeeeeeee!

  16. Jeff mother fuckin Carter. Nice to see Brown pay homage to Jack Johnson with that defensive zone centering pass to Kovy near the end.

    Welcome back Mr. Carter!

  17. Sniper star does no look shot and treads the needle. What an amazing hot streak. Hockey gods are pleased.

  18. Awesome!!!! I love the replay watching the two older Kings fans in the stands jumping up and down!! Let’s finish this for the long time fans!

  19. Cannot emphasize how great Penner was on that goal! Parked his pancake eatin’ ass right in front of Brodeur.

  20. UNF that Doughty goal was sooooooooooooooooo good I just can’t get over it. That Carter goal was absurdly good too. <3

  21. Holy Fuck was at a venue with some of my bros for the entire game. To see that shot go in by Carter was a thing of beauty beyond all beauty. The beers were good too! :D Fuckin A Kings mutherfuckin 2 AND 0 SC Finals!!!

  22. Just got tickets to game 3…totally overpaid and then some..FUCK!!! So worth it Go Kings Go!!

  23. LA 2 to 1 wins are a sight to behold. They thrive all the time with tight games. It looks like they prefer 1 goal wins.
The suspense is extreme and is typical Kings style. I guess I am finally getting used to it.

    GO KINGS GO!!!

  24. anyone know when the kings arrive back in LA tomorrow at LAX?

    • Bailey says they’re not doing it tonight. They want people to save their energy for game 3.

  25. Does anyone know when the Kings arrive at LAX? Want to welcome them with the other fans!
