Jamie Kompon Contract Not Renewed

When I wrote the Jamie Kompon Appreciation Page many months ago, my tongue was firmly planted in my cheek. I also wrote it out of disgust. Those who have read us regularly know that I was not (and am not) a fan of Jamie Kompon…and that is being kind. I considered he and Terry Murray to be a major part of the L.A. Kings offensive problems, although Murray had the ever redeeming quality of building a defensive system that was the foundation for the L.A. Kings playoff success.

When I learned about Jamie Kompon’s contract not being renewed via rapid fire text messages to my phone, while I was in the middle of a conversation with a client, the first thought that occurred to me is “about time.” The second was, “the organization is growing up.”

We won the Stanley Cup. We did so despite having Kompon as our powerplay coach. This is a positive move for the franchise. It is another step forward. I don’t know who his replacement will be but I do know that, with the Cup in our hands and Dean Lombardi and his staff now understanding the critical importance of the right coach (read: Darryl Sutter) and what a difference that can make to a team’s success or lack thereof, they will make the right decision. Isn’t that really all that matters? The present and future of our Cup winning team?

Jamie Kompon, we wish you the best. You lifted the Stanley Cup as a member of the L.A. Kings and, for that, you should be thankful. Few get to experience what you have.

L.A. Kings fans, let’s move forward. No need to throw daggers at the man. Let’s win more Cups.

  1. and Stoll extended.

    Hallelujah and Amen.

  2. I know it’s early, but with Stoll and Fraser extended, and not Penner, maybe game 6 was Penner’s last game as a King.

  3. I’m still debating whether we should go after Penner or not.

A lot of variables to consider here.

  4. I don’t think Penner is required, given King seemed to play fine with Carter and Richards. Penner just didn’t put of numbers that they had hoped, regardless of the goals he got in the playoffs.
They can sign King for a fraction of what they might be looking to even pay at the most for Penner.
Stoll took a hometown discount, however he was a much better player the entire year, regardless of his offensive numbers.
Stoll plays on all 3 facets of the NHL game, even strength, penalty kill, power play and Stoll is one of the best shootout players on the Kings and possibly in the NHL.
Stoll at 3 mill is perfect, I don’t think you can say the same for Penner, who has just not produced with the Kings like he did with Edmonton, and has made trading a former 1st round pick in Teubert (regardless), a 1st round pick and a 2nd round pick a questionable decision regardless of having a few big goals.
You have to remember if Gagne is able to stay healthy, paying another guy 3 mill to toil between a 3rd or 4th line would be a bigger waste.

  5. They selected Tanner instead. So if (Pe)nner won’t be with the team, then at least they’ll have (Ta)nner. So that’s not that bad is it? And he even plays left wing.
Damn you guys. You really bring the bizarro out in me……… but I like it, even if it makes absolutely no sense to anyone else.

  6. Its only been a month since the Kings won the Cup and Im already fed up with Dean Lombardi again. He fell into the Trevor Lewis, defensive forward trap AGAIN. Does this guy ever learn? Bad pick. Better than Trevor Lewis but it’s a bad pick.

  7. Nicholls will be his replacement.

  8. What has the world come to when you don’t do your job correctly and get fired?????

  9. And JUST when the power play was coming together.

  10. Why am I not surprised. If Bernie’s down for the job he’d be Way better anyways.

  11. What’s ‘at you’re saying?

I’m having a tough time getting Surly’s “ass tattoo-scented candles” outa my mind.

  12. “…understanding the critical importance of the right coach (read: Darryl Sutter)”

And to think, back in December we wanted Randy Carlyle soooooo badly!

  13. “That’s an awesome, awesome thing”

  14. I want Mark Hardy back with the Kings. Let Bernie stay on as a guru/consultant!

  15. Let Penner go back to Anaheim, that’s where he’ll wind up for about 3 to 3.5 per year just wait and see.

  16. Go get Bobby Ryan if you want a consistent big body that scores with the puck not the pancakes and the chicks!

  17. I trust no one who plays hard only when they want to or needs to!
Contract year, all or nothing. I don’t trust him (the duck scenario)!!

  18. Bobby, the first thing we do on opening night is have a toast, to never having to see this slug behind the bench, on our TV, in our nightmares. All hail Dean and Darryl!
