Winning the Stanley Cup Is the Lubrication to the NHL Lockout

It’s weird being an L.A. Kings fan these days. Last summer, when I thought about labor unrest and a lockout, I cursed under my breath at Bettman and the league. I asked myself questions such as, “do these jack asses not realize we have a healthy league and it has taken years since the last lockout to get us here?” and “are they really going to be so shortsighted so as to cause damage to the general fan’s perception of hockey and take the league backward?”

The Die-Hards aren’t going anywhere. Surly and I and you will be fans regardless of what happens. That is not to say we will be “happy” about a lockout but we certainly won’t swear off hockey and our L.A. Kings because rich people want to get richer. It’s the casual fan (both active and potential) whose psyche will be affected and will turn on basketball, baseball or that one sport with the funny looking ball and 15 minutes of total action over 3 hours.

Do I care? Strangely, not really or, better written, only a little. I won’t be “yay, a lockout, more time to celebrate the Cup!” Some of you may but you’re weird and I am not. Instead, my general demeanor about this whole NHL lockout is that of a spectator…a fat and happy one that just feasted on roasted tender duck with an orange brandy sauce and fresh herbed vegetables…and a Samuel Smith’s Porter. Our Cup runneth over and I’m in a happy state of drunk.

Go Kings!

  1. The big problem for the Kings with a lockout (if you want to call it a problem), is that it will be a big detriment in the effort to keep all the new fans we gained around. Forget your regular NHL casual, I’m talking people who got caught up in Kings fever this run and would be more likely to go to games and support the team this coming season. Would they remember in January? Beyond?

  2. Fuck the lockout I want hockey. Jamie Benn is still on the market. The guy would be a killer addition to the already killer lineup AND the guy plays LW. Imagine him on a line with either Kopi/Brown or Richards/Carter. I would rather see him on the Richards/Carter line.

The guy’s got moves, skating ability, he’s a tough fucker that can drill people. Dallas picked up Jagr which I don’t know what they’re thinking but they look like they’re on the rebuild side of things. We’ve got the money for it. Unload Westgarth, Lokti, Parse, Gagne. If Gagne does end up playing I think he’ll be out again before Christmas.

    • Jamie Benn isn’t on the market. I haven’t been paying a whole lot of attention to the league lately, but I know that Dallas didn’t get that fucking stupid overnight.

        • It’s true that Jamie Benn is a RFA. It’s also true that the Stars would match any offer sheet short of a ridiculous overpayment. As much as I like Jamie Benn, and would like to have him on the Kings…not going to happen.

          • I would be shocked, to say the least, if Dallas were to let him go. We’ve got a great lineup already (If Penner decides to play).

      • I’m not sure if we gotta give them the draft picks alongside the money. I don’t think we have many picks left. I dunno. But damn Jamie Benn on the Kings the guy would Kill it!

        • We can’t offer sheet Benn anyways, you need to have your own draft picks to execute the offer sheet and we don’t have next years first rounder (gone to columbus in Carter trade). So the only way we could snag him is if we trade for him and they would want a Kings ransom (sorry I had to), and rightfully so Benn is a beast out there.

          • I thought we were short on picks. No worries. We’ve won the cup and the team’s pretty much intact. Good to go.

  3. Self inflicted wounds would be again insane.

They need to complete their ritual posturing and sign a deal to keep us fans diverted from politics this fall. I am already worn out from this political season.

    We don’t need hockey politics!

  4. here ya go surly. i cracked up when i saw the title

  5. BTW. Do you know we are the STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS!!!! Yippieeeee!!

  6. You lost me with “Porter Beer going with Duck and Orange Brandy Sauce”. Come on, I think you have to go with a nice Riesling here!

  7. “Our Cup runneth over”? Sounds like a line from Alice in Chains. Last lock out cost us seeing Jason Allison work more magic (before he retired) with Luc and Palffy. Shoot, The Wall Cechmanek was supposed to back stop us to the cup then. lol

  8. My biggest problem with the lockout, is that we actually have a decent shot at a repeat. No team has been in such prime position in a long time. An extended stoppage could shake things up…

  9. I’m worried about Frozen Fury.
