Antitrust, Distrust, Decertification and Detox From Diatribe…What Else is New?

L.A. Kings fans are a lucky bunch. During the chill of the NHL lockout, we have a 16-4 playoff run and a Stanley Cup Championship to warm our cockles. With the talk now of decertification (the ultimate “oh yeah?!” to the owners) over what is rumored to be a $182 million difference between the NHL and NHLPA over five years (which is about $1.2 million or so per team, per people who decided to do the math), we are going to need those roasted chestnuts through this long winter.

That is assuming of course many of us are still around to give a damn once the ice defrosts, from the tip of our id to the dark caverns of our nether region.

Coincidentally, though we often hear those inside the rink and “the know” thank us for our support, this lockout has shown me the NHL, NHLPA and even the media consider us irrelevant to the process. You may note the media and self-proclaimed pundits don’t write a whole hell of a lot about the fans. We know Gary Bettman and the 30 owners don’t give a damn. Their negotiation tactics and conduct is conclusive proof of this fact. From day one, a lockout has been the goal of Bettman and the whores he represents. He loves the fans like the Old Testament loves the Canaanites. We are the sheep to his slaughter. The NHLPA may love us more. Does the foster parent who won’t beat one of the children every day of the week love that child more? It’s all relative.

So, how are you? It’s been a while.

Who do you miss more? Me or Surly? Go ahead, say it, I promise you won’t hurt Surly’s feelings.

I got a couple of books yesterday from the local bookstore. I was surprised to find them (total random mosey toward the sports section), nearly as much as I was surprised there is still a local bookstore. One is called the “Year of the Los Angeles Kings” and is an official NHL book on the Kings’ championship run. Not a bad piece of work. The other is by the L.A. Times and titled “Crowning Glory”. The only bad thing about the latter is that Chris Foster and Bill Plaschke contribute to it, reason enough not to purchase it. Fortunately, most of the words are that of Helene Elliott and Lisa Dillman which is why I did.

I had a random thought to turn this place into one where we could talk about anything – politics, books, music, sex, beer, drugs if you are so disposed…and then I realized I am a Libertarian who may offend most of you, enjoy reading Shakespeare, history and war, listen primarily to classical music and jazz, am married, don’t drink a lot of beer and don’t use drugs…so you would be offended and possibly bored out of your mind. Good thing I conquered that monetary thought.

I have taken some pleasure out of harassing other NHL teams’ Twitter accounts, primarily the Ducks, Sharks, Stars and Coyotes. The Coyotes Official Twitter account has blocked me so I have gathered supporters and am trying to commence a jihad. In short, you can always follow me on Twitter for laughs.

How many times have you watched game 6? HAH! Not even close. Loser.

Have you read any interviews with Terry Murray about the L.A. Kings winning the Cup? Me neither. How about Dave Taylor? Me neither. Andy Murray? Nope. If you have, share.

I miss Quisp’s statistically (just realized that rhymes with testically, which isn’t really a word) inspired spreadsheets…he has been a little passive aggressive recently on his blog…no, not Kings Kool-aid, remember he gave that one up to go to Jewels from the Crown (still a damn dumb name, nearly as stupid as Frozen Royalty), which he then left to start McSorley’s Stick. That one.

That reminds me, can they give the Insider job (that didn’t rhyme with testically but also has genital overtones) to John Hove please? Are they just waiting for the lockout to end before they figure this out? It’s like procrastination for the sake of procrastination. Surly can fill in the details about how that works.

Speaking of The Mayor, read this article about Kyle Clifford joining the Ontario Reign. I have been to two Reign games this season. Shinny hockey but fun. Going again this Wednesday. You won’t see me in a Scribe 9 jersey. Won’t wear that until we raise the banner. But, if you want to join me and others, tweet me @kingsofhockey or email me.

Enough about me. What’s new?

  1. I miss this. The site, you guys, hockey, the beloved Kings, etc. *sigh*

  2. My wife is super smiling over having more quality time since I am not at Staples or in front of the big screen watching NHL games.
I am also saving loads of time foregoing reading on the computer and smartphone about the NHL. I also saved a tidy sum on my credit card in non-existent tickets. Ditto for gas and parking and over-priced game concessions and merchandise.
With all the money we saved we can afford to fly to Moscow to see some KHL games. I fear that I might become a fan of that league and then I would need to move to Russia. So I better skip that idea.
Maybe I could spend the extra cash and go for hypnosis treatments to forget about the NHL. All I know is that I dumped a lot of bread on the NHL for 45 years. Maybe this is a good time to say “adios” and attend AA meetings to purge my addictions to watching pucks sliding on and flying above a sheet of ice.
After all I got my kicks now with the very best witnessing and spectating with the record breaking Kings run to the Cup. That feat is not going to be duplicated ever. So after somebody wins the California mega millions why buy another new mega ticket?
Also the Kings are up for sale to new billionaires. I am not sure I will like the new owner(s). Maybe a jerk(s) own the team next.
All I know is that Bettman, the owners and the players want more of my bank account after it is all said and done. I am not sure if I want to share the extra cash. Don’t they know about the Great Recession? The Fiscal Cliff? Chronic unemployment?
The owners ought to remember about what happened to Horse Racing in the USA. They could be next.
Right now my chant is Go Galaxy Go!

    • My problem is I do not have anything t fill my winter void. I never cared for Baseball Basketball or Football, I have been watching the Galaxy though. But I find myself bored unable to find something to do. I still play CoD:BO2 and Halo4 on XBL. But I dont have anything noteworthy to follow and find myself pacing around and trying to find something to keep me busy.
I have been a Kings fan forever, but after a short season and a lost season and now this season, I am feeling duped and jaded, I know I will be back, but not sure all of my passion will return, it really depends how long the next CBA will be and weather or not Bettman is around.
I know everyone tells me to go to AA games and what not, but I live in Torrance and I hate Ontatio, the city that is. Same with Valencia. I have been missing the ice dogs forever and it stings even more this year.
If they cannot get their crap together, I know I wont be at staples less I get free tickets. And the whole Kings for sale thing freaks me out too. My cup bubble has been burst well stashed for now anyways.
I am usually pretty easy going but I am really down right now.

  3. I miss childish vermon.

  4. 1) I miss you guys.
    2) I can’t tell the difference between your writings.
    3) Quisp gives me headaches.
    4) I’ve been hooking up with the ex-wife.
    5) Was hoping you would give an in-depth analysis
    of union decertification.
    6) Occasional whiskey and water. Some beer. No
    7) Not sure I spelled “occasional” correctly.
    8) Loving the Monarchs. Vey, Toffoli, Deslauriers,
    Andreoff and Muzzin.
    9) Am truly disgusted we are missing a year of Kopi’s

  5. Yesterday was depressing. As I currently reside in TX…the Kings were supposed to be in Dallas yesterday. Fuck me.

Hey Scribe…what are some Jazz recommendations? I am just now breaking in. So far I’ve only scratched the surface w/ Davis and Coltrane.

    • Try these on for size: Oscar Peterson, Thelonius Monk, Cannonball Adderly, Charles Mingus (my personal favorite, Charlie Parker and Art Blakey. Those should wet the beak.

      • Right on. Thanks Greg. Monk’s name has been said to me before so I’m eager to listen to him. I’ll keep Mingus in the forefront as well. Appreciated.

    • Armstrong, Ellington, Basie, Goodman, Davis as you mentioned, the list is at least 20. Much depends on your taste for instruments. Do you like horns, piano? Jazz has a broad spectrum. My suggestion is find local jazz clubs, go in, sit back and listen undistracted. Let your taste mature from there

  6. It’s being reported that the two sides have agreed to mediation! Looks like hockey might happen this season after all!

  7. You’re back! i missed you!!! I missed that biting tongue of yours and that razor sharp brain. I enjoy listening to the podcast archives, they’re great.. As for the lockout, I follow Bob McKenzie or LeBrun for their articles, I trust their take on things. Bettman and the owners are employing bully tactics. A true negotiation is supposed to be a win win scenario with a fair and reasonable outcome to both parties. Bettman /owners never intended that, just sign on our dotted line. How blind can they be not to realize that hockey can’t afford to lose any more of it’s audience, it’s barely above lawn darts now in ratings. At least JQ is getting proper time to heal his back.
But I don’t like Kopitar playing in Europe , I get that he wants to play with his brother. But you have to wonder when the season does start, say 60 games, at playoff time when most players have played 60, he’ll have 25 to 30 more (MOra has played 24 games so far). I just hope that fatigue doesn’t play a factor the lonhger the Kings go in the playoffs.
Hopefully he mediators meeting on Wens will help to bridge the gap.

    • I wish I was confident in the mediation process but it didn’t work in 2004, if I recall and NFL – NBA also tried it without success. Now if I was the mediator, Bettman would go the bathroom early on and never be seen again…and then we would resolve it all amidst the police investigation that would turn up nothing.

    • my only concern is injury. Kopi is used to an 82 game season. in order to retain this level of fitness they need the games. practice games DO NOT equal real games (even Swiss Euro games).

another way to look at it is that Kopi, DB, AMart and the other guys playing in Europe will come back and be a step ahead of the guys that stayed here. they will be in better shape (not counting possible injury), because their ‘legs’ will ready. they also won’t look as rusty as the guys that have been playing in what is essentially NHL – level pick up games.

  8. Thanks for the wrtie Bobby.. yes I miss this blog terribly.. I like Jazz.. the Sax is one of the sexist intruments in music.. but Classical…ick.
I received the Crowing Glory book from my brother soon after we Won the Cup.. so sweet of him.. I like it ..but it ends without the final.. I think they jumped the gun on publishing…I will
Get the other book.. I have not looked for any Since September.. Thank you for the Cliffy update.. now the Reign look more interesting.. truthfully think in a state of mild cronic depression.. Hockey is my passion… just not 100% without it.. Joined a FF league.. first time..
and in First Place.. why ..because I have NO loyalty to any player.. FB really not my sport.. too slow.. now if I was trying a fantasy Hockey league .. OMG think I would make myself crazy.. So Bobby.. #9… I must have missed this somewhere in the beginnings of your blog..
what is the significance? I am going to see my favorite #9 in a couple of weeks..Bernie :)
Hosted by Bobby Miller.. looking forward to that!!!
    GO KINGS GO!!!

    • Our site was started on 9-12-09.

You gotta come to a Reign game. They are so much damn fun! Sit with our group. Surly even wants to go now. Saw Cliffy score a goal tonight. Won 6-2. Last game I went to – won 8-1.
