Penguins @ Monarchs – Ghost of Monarchs Past

Man, how much must it have sucked to go up 3 goals to none only to lose in overtime? That’s a question best posed to the Pirates’ goalie, Chad Johnson. He lived it Friday night when the Monarchs rallied back late, forcing and eventually winning in overtime. The shorty-machine Stefan Legein sank them with a skillfully placed snapshot following a Pirates turnover in the neutral zone. Good stuff.

After a day of rest, the Monarchs are back at home and playing the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in a Sunday matinee. In every meeting with the Pens this season, former Monarchs goalie Jeff Zatkoff has shut the door.

It still blows my mind that they let him get away.

I’m generally not a superstitious guy, but I do believe in hard evidence. The same phenomenon struck when Danny Taylor and Barry Brust came to this building. It must be some sort of voodoo curse or something conjured up by the Kings failing to retain goaltending talent.

But today’s a new day. The past several games suggest this is a new team. Winning is their way, and based on that, the curse shall be broken.

Loved you in a Monarchs jersey Zats, but not today. May you be leaky early and often.

Go Monarchs (and Kings)!

…and Happy Birthday to Monarchs mascot Max!

  1. Who’s replacing Tif’s position in the Monarchs line up?

    • That’s pretty tough to say. A lot of the other rookies including Jordan Weal and Colton Yellow Horn have been finding ways to produce, earning them more ice time in key situations. The Monarchs have also brought in three or four new faces in the past two weeks on professional tryout agreements. Playing up front are Ian O’Connor, Kris Belan and Hunter Bishop, and on D, we have Matt Case. They’re all very promising too, but only time will tell.

  2. Hi, thanks for sharing.
