Jarome Iginla Wants Us. Ménage à Trois Anyone?

So, there’s this report that Jarome Iginla has placed the L.A. Kings on his list of 4 teams to which he would accept a trade.

The teams are Boston, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh and Chicago.

Cross out Pittsburgh as they just landed Brenden Morrow.

This got me thinking. Dean Lombardi has gone kinky before, right? The Justin Williams trade…why do I feel like there was another? Three-way trades are fun. But how does that work with a no-trade clause? Can we buy him and then sell him for something we need? Like to Boston for one of their overstocked defensemen?

There is an illogical side of me that wouldn’t bitch too loudly if we got Jarome so long as Bernier isn’t going the other way…or one of our top prospects…or, you know what, a trade for him makes no fucking sense, forget this post exists and go back to doing whatever it was you were doing.

  1. Nothing like adding a “downhiller” to a team riding the crest. Perhaps its just a Kings tradition.

  2. No thanks. If it’s not broken don’t fix it. A two game losing streak does not mean broken.

  3. Pretty sure the Cammy trade was a three way. And the uhh….. Um…. Damnit I know there was another one.

  4. Anyone who wouldn’t accept Iggy with open arms needs to pull their heads from their asses. The guy has scored 107 goals in the 3 seasons previous to this one with absolutely no decent players to play with, can you imagine what he could do with Kopi. He is a Vet who plays Sutters style PERFECTLY, and has pretty much won at every level. If any of you actually think this exact same line up is going to repeat, needs to take a look at how many teams actually do it now. Getting a guy in the locker room for the boys to play that much harder for is only a bonus. I can assure you any deal for Iggy would be contingent on him signing an extension, as Iggy has no interest in being a rental and would prefer the west coast. I say do it deano, all I ever hear from Kings fans is how no one actually chooses to play hear (Nash, Kovi, Richards, etc etc). Now we finally have a superstar that is choosing LA and we act like were too good for one of the best snipers in the last decade.

    • Iggy is a shell of his former self, I’d rather have toffoli grow and develop than give ice time to a rental that doesn’t improve our team and would cost us long-term assets. If we could get Iggy for $1, then yes! But this isn’t Hossa, or Richards as Free Agents (the latter I was never excited about personally). This is the next Teddy Purcell trade in waiting.

      • Toffoli is NOT ready, did you see him in the Phoenix game? once it got rough he disappeared and regressed. Hence the reason he hasn’t played since. The kid will be good for us one day nut that isn’t now or this year or maybe not even next year. Iggy can be a stop gap until he is FULLY ready.

Have some god damn respect for one of the best snipers in the game for fucks sake. We need another sniper in our top six, preferrably to play with Kopi. Ever notice lately that when Carter’s not scoring neither are the Kings? Williams is not a true sniper and neither is Brown, but Iggy with Kopi is easily a 30 goal player.

        • I would imagine that the Kings don’t agree with you considering that Toffoli has not been optioned back the the AHL. He can contribute this season as we saw in the first Phoenix game, but you are right he needs to improve, as Sutter would most likely say: most twenty-year-olds do. Perhaps they will option him down later today and never call him back, but I am willing to bet that the fact he is still up here means that DL thinks he is gaining something he can’t in the AHL. And so what if he was a frightened turtle for one game, DS will use that as a teaching tool and make the kid better for it. Don’t get me wrong I LOVE the idea of Iginla with Kopi & Brownie. But I HATE the idea of giving up assets for something I feel is a superfluous addition, that would most likely be achieved by moving a necessary piece. We need Bernier this year, unless we get a Vokoun or Nabokov we have no backup. And anyone who is still bitching about being slighted in free agency needs to head your original advice and “pull their heads from their asses” EVERYONE should want to play in LA. WE WON THE FUCKING CUP!

          • I don’t think we are far off from agreeing with each other. I think Toffoli is going to be great but Lombardi is notorious for letting his top players develop in the AHL and not rushing them up when their not ready. Toffoli right now is not ready, close but not quite especially for playoff style hockey. Last thing we need with him is for his confidence to be shaken and set him back a few years.

    • Iggy is far from a shell of his former self. You must never watch Flames games. Don’t let the stat sheet fool you. Looking at Doughty’s stat sheet, I could tell you he has been playing shitty all year, but that’s obviously not the case.

I’d like the move if it was contingent on him signing a 1 or 2 year extension. Give up one of our guys in Manchester and a pick. Some of you highly over value our younger guys, and lets be honest, the Kings are horrible at bringing up their scoring forwards to play at the big level, so this would work out.

Yes, we do need defense, I get it. But why can’t we get Iggy and a stay at home D as well? It doesn’t have to be one or the other.

  5. bernier going the other way but I actually don’t think feaster would want bernie. feaster probably wants muzzin, toffoli + 1st round. but if he’ll take bernier + muzzin +vey/kozun/weal…i pull the trigger. iginla = repeat…no iginla, no repeat.

    • Bernier Muzzin and a prospect is an overpayment, Bernier alone is close. Maybe we throw in a prospect or draft pick and take Joey MacDonald back so we have a capable backup for Quick.
      Bernier+Kozan/draft pick
      Iginla+MacDonald

Oh and by the way I love Bernier, but we all know he is going to get ZERO playing time down the stretch and in the playoffs as Sutter is going to either win or lose on Quicks back and will play him him every chance to get him in playoff form. I would hate to keep Bernier and have someone offer sheet him this summer on us, as we would probably not match as we can’t afford $10+ mill in goalies.

    • Ok that’s enough! I’m not sure why everyone else is being so polite, but that does it for me. Hitman you are being a fucking idiot! Iggy is barely worth a 2nd rounder now! Bernier has 2 more years as a RFA is a former 1st rounder and has only increased his value. He alone is worth Iggy and a pick or prospect. Also, who would be a backup if we move Bernier? MacDonald is shit! He was the #4 goalie in Detroit, and in reality the #3 in Calgary. Yes Iginla would be a nice addition, but not if we have to give up anything of value. Especially a #1 goalie who’d then be in our conference and leave us with no backup! We are better off with Bernier for this season than with Iginla. I don’t know why Iginla makes your panties so wet, but he is not the same player he used to be, he would be gone after this season, and whatever we give up to give him will be wasted. Also, what the fuck is wrong with you, if you don’t see Brown’s value? Seriously, did you sustain brain-damage? Brown is a third liner like Carter belongs in the AHL. MORON!

      • stfu. your arguments flawed.

1.Bernier asked for a trade!!! He doesnt want to be on this team!!! get it???

        2. We have plenty of capable backups in the minors and coming up in the juniors. do your research. Jones, berube, mannino and gibson in the pipeline.

        3. Iginla would make this team a hell of a lot better. perfect complement to kopitar and williams. Youtube “jarome iginla highlights”.

        4. Brown has little to no skill. his toe drag move on the wing does not work. he does not open up ice for his linemates. he is decent around the net if even that. well yeah he’s a great hitter, but for fucks sake we dont need 5 hits a game from a top line player.

        get a fucking clue man!!!!

  6. Love bernier but he is not going to resign with the kings this summer to be a backup for the next ten years. Bernier amart vey for iginla. What would boston or chicago give for him? Can u imagine kopi iginla williams brown richards carter. Wow!

  7. Pretty gross man. Anyways…just thought of something. Calgary will be in the same division as the kings next year right. Do we want to play against bernier like 8 times a year?

    • Good point, that many seem to be missing. Also, Bernier as a RFA would still get us a pick(s) based on the AAV of his contract. I say after the season we trade him to the Islanders for their 1st.

      • What if he signs an offer sheet, then what?

        • I am not 100% sure what it looks like under the new CBA & next years cap but last season:
Current Averaged Salary Draft Pick Compensation
below $1,110,249 and below No compensation
          $$1,110,250 to $1,682,194 Third-round pick
          $1,682,195 to $3,364,391 Second-round pick
          $3,364,392 to $5,046,585 First- and third-round pick
$5,046,586 to $6,728,781 First-, second-, and third-round pick
          $6,728,782 to $8,410,976 Two first-round picks and a second- and third-round pick
$8,410,977 and above Four first-round picks

I think it is safe to assume that Bernier would not sign an offer shett that is smaller than $3.4M per year. Therefore we would get a 1st &3rd, again way more value than Iginla at this point.

          • How is a first and a third more value than a 30-40 goal scorer with playoff experience and has won at pretty much every level in hockey? Oh and knows Sutter ‘s system like the back of his hand. What if the first rounder turns out to be another Hickey, Teubert, Tukonen, Tambellini etc, etc? You know what your getting in Iginla and have NO clue what the 1st and 3rd will bring. The Kings are good now, and as a Kings fan I want to see us compete year in and year out and NOT trade our best trade chip for a bunch of what if’s. It could be decades before we see a core like we have now. One cup is not enough after 40+ years of futility.

          • Considering that Iginla’s numbers would translate into a 25 goal scorer in an 82-game season, playoff experience means about dick, “won at pretty much every level in hockey” is the definition of fluff. I will give you knows Sutter’s system and would excel. But this is the deepest draft since 2003, and just about anyone who would sign Bernier would have a top 10 if not top 5 pick, but hey we may just end up with the next Shea Weber. Your reasoning is habitually almost purely specious. “You know what you are getting Iginla,” NO YOU DON’T!! All you know is what he has done and that he is 35 and a fraction of who he used to be, and will be gone next year. I agree with you though: “The Kings are good now, and as a Kings fan I want to see us compete year in and year out and NOT trade our best trade chip for a bunch of what if’s. It could be decades before we see a core like we have now. One cup is not enough after 40+ years of futility.” So why in the HELL are you insisting on selling 50 cents on the dollar and buying at a 200% markup? You are simultaneously undervaluing Bernier and overvaluing Iginla. How does, getting a 1 year rental help us compete year in and out when we could instead potentially get a 20 year old rookie? It’s not like we haven’t proven we can win with our current forwards! We get shutout in back to back games and suddenly lets give up our biggest (realistic to be moved) trade asset and create a huge void behing Quick! Also, you do realize that guys like Iginla have their goal numbers inflated by a lack of talent around them? Not to say he isn’t good and wasn’t great but to use the term “30-40 goal scorer” to describe the 2013 version of Iggy is just not true.

  8. It’s nice to read that LA is on a star players places to play list… Fuck you Rick Nash and Brad Richards!

I’d be really disappointed if Tyler is one of the prospects traded for Iggy.

    • Lets say we do get him though.. Who’d be the odd man out in the top 6? Williams/Penner?
Penner makes to much money to be in a bottom six role

  9. Penner shouldn’t be in the top six to begin with. I like him but he slows the richards carter line down. Shit id rather see clifford there.

  10. If Iginla comes then salary has to go in the deal or next year’s cap becomes a problem….. Id gladly sit on Bernier and lose him as a RFA and take the #1 pick in what is supposed to be a very deep draft for him in order to have him as a backup through this year’s playoffs. Is there any position where having depth is more important? He has played at least as well as Quick, and with this year’s schedule, quick’s injury, and what has been an inconsistent and young defense (that isn’t helped by a lack of practice time between games) a quality backup is essential.

    • You would rather lose our best trade chip for a measley first rounder, over getting a proven superstar who still has a couple good years left??????

    • Well said, and to answer Canadian King, yes. Because Iginla could play for another 40 years, but we’d only have him for one run then lose him for nothing.

  11. I did delete.. as trade speculation no my deal..the Kolvachuck summer did me in…now had to go trash to find this to say
    Really..this is serious?
Jerome Iginla! All time Great player..future Hall of Famer..heart of Calgary.. why can a franchise not respect a player like that and keep lifetime? Yea yea the money..etc. No Loyalty in Hockey..just like other sports. For Jerome… a chance to play for a better team..maybe rejuvenate him. think Jager..not that he never stopped being an Elite…
I am sure I have spelled every player wrong..but in phone and cannot ck or afraid this post will disappear.
    GO KINGS GO!!!
    WWTC!!!

    • I don’t think it is a lack of loyalty to Iginla. He will be gone in the offseason, he wants to compete and win and Calgary has no chance unless they rebuild. So he is telling them, send me to a team that can win it this year and get some assets. Then, I will sign with a team that can compete until I retire. No disrespect no lack of loyalty, just a situation where a former-elite player can still go and wants to get his name on the Cup, while his soon to be former franchise plans for the future.

  12. Iginla wil not be a rental, he said (in an interview up north) he’s not interested in being a rental player and wants a contract. DL wouldn’t give up player/prosepct and pick for a rental. If the Flames want too much (which is why Pitts dropped out and went w Morrow) then you shop elsewhere. Either for true top 6 player non rental or get Jagr for the playoffs. There is another rumor from an East Coast writer that says that the Bruins want Iggy bad and are willing to overpay and that the Kings are involved in another major trade for a winger and a dman.
I guess we’ll find out soon enough. April 3 is next week.

OT- Penner out tonight/Toffolli in . Carter practiced some shifts with Kopi and Williams was the LW on the Richrds line with TT.
I get why Sutter wants to do that, 0 goals in 2 games is not good. But that’s risky esp against th Hawks, putting your 2 best scorers on 1 line makes it easier for them to shut you down. The only thing that might happen is Richard will shoot more , he does that when Carter isn’t with him.

    • There is no way we can afford Iggy after this season. Unless we move a core player, or don’t resign Scuds, anyone who isn’t making league minimum after this year would be a rental for us.
