Sorry Captain Brown, Not Good Enough

50 games

10 goals

6 assists

Unacceptable

Meanwhile Anze Kopitar is also heading into another one of his now expected slumps. What does he have, 3 goals in 17 games?

If Brown isn’t 100 percent, move him
to the fourth line, cut his minutes to 9 or so and lets get someone hungry on that line like Pearson. I would rather see a kid who wants to show the size of his shaft and earn his keep than our captain dog it.

What do we get from Dustin Brown, about 2-3 decent games out of 15 now?

He is playing average defensively, below average offensively and take away the rare flashes of beast mode we see from time to time, he has pretty much been a depth winger all season.

That is below his pay grade. At this point I may take Nicole on wing and let Brown stay home with the kids.

  1. Brown does have those child bearing hips….

  2. I noticed that since the cup run, captain beast hasn’t come back to play. Maybe he will make a small appearance for a hit or two every so often, but no more flying around the ice, punishing the opposition with bone crunching hits, and brilliant offensive plays.

    Is he done?

    Is he over it?

Is he looking for a change of scenery?

Is there a divide in the locker room that he can’t overcome and is now facing that reality?

Is there too much personality for him to handle?

I’ve said it before, there are 3 teams playing for the Kings. Brown’s team, Mike’s team, an the Monarchs.

I don think brown has anyone’s ear, and it looks to me as though he doesn’t have much respect comin his way from his team mates.

    Maybe I’m hypercritical. I don’t know.

    • You have bugs on the Kings bench and in the locker room?

    • Just stop with the random conjecture buddy. I’d love you to tell the team your thoughts on their perceived disrespect of their captain – you know, the guy that led the team to the only Cup in franchise history, and the guy who at the very least is going to be an AC, if not C, on the US Olympic team. Regarding what you “said before” – there is probably a reason you have to repeat yourself – the first time you said it, it didn’t make sense, saying it twice isn’t going to change anything.

  3. He certainly isn’t ‘right’ and hasn’t been all season. I have to guess its the knee. He doesn’t really has burst of speed that has always helped him close and make the hits or get around defenders. I would bet he is being protective of his knee and therefore not playing on, or with, the edge we’ve seen in the past.
In general, the Kings look slow and tired. I wonder if the flu bug is making the rounds.

  4. What the fuck is happening to this team? Very mediocre.

  5. Brown has been this season what we all thought he would always be his first two seasons in the league. A solid grinder.

    • Only problem is he isn’t on an entry level contract anymore and he is slated to make $5.8 mill per, I agree with you though he is just not cutting it. If you look at the last 3-4 years he hasn’t been all that great except for getting hot at the perfect time before our legendary cup run. Earlier that season he was inconsistent crap and it took trade rumours to get his ass going. That is pathetic for your captain to be like that. Not sure what the answer is with him, maybe he needs a change of scenery and trading him for another top six LW is the answer, not like we need his leadership or lack there of.

  6. Either he’s hurt or he’s really in a major funk. I think he played like a little over 10 minutes in Boston. I can’t remember when he was that low. We’re talking Fraser minutes.

  7. Brownie needs to go, time for a change of scenary and the team should start by taking that “C” of his jersey!
Trade him to Buffalo, Winnipeg or even Edmonton and go get some talent, not draft picks!
Got get David Perron and Justin Schultz from the Oilers for Brown and Martinez or Muzzin.
We’ve needed offense for three years and gotten Jeff Carter so far!
Kopitar is such a good passer, I don’t worry when he doesn’t score, I just worry who will?
    Williams hasn’t scored consistently either.
There’s too much fire power in the West, I know we’ve got a pretty good defense that just hasn’t played well lately but, we can’t outscore these guys right now!!
Kopitar and Richards are two guys that look to get everyone else involved, Carter is a sniper, King works his ass off and has showed he will continue to, everyone else needs to get to work or get the fuck out!!!

  8. I just don’t understand the philosophy of constantly changing lines. Don’t get me wrong I do understand guys earning promotions and demotions but the way DS has been moving things around it’s no wonder every player on the ice looks lost. This is the same thing that TM did for so long and right before he got fired and this looks like the same team (which could be a good thing since we won the cup that year), but I think it’s time to find some consistency in the line-up and roll with it. The entire final month and playoff run in 2012 had the same lines and d pairings. Again, i know it’s not the same, but there has to be something to the lack of awareness and sloppy play the Kings have showed for the last month.

    It’s frustrating.

P.S. Can’t wait to watch NHL Revealed to see what DS says in the Locker Room between periods or pre/post game.

    • I agree 100%!
I get it for a few shifts or a game or two but, all the time?
Maybe it’s Sutter’s way of letting Dean know he needs some new blood in the room.

  9. OT- Kozun traded to Leafs for Andrew Crescenzi , a big 21 yr old center

On Crescenzi from Hockey’s Future write up:

    Talent Analysis

A hulking center standing 6’5, Crescenzi possesses ideal size for a bottom-six player. Offensively, he can chip in on occasion, but his success is likely to stem from defensive assignments. He moves well for a big man, and initiates contact consistently. Continued focus on his skating, specifically explosiveness, will help him become a regular in the AHL.

    • Good for Kozun. He deserves a chance at the NHL level and he wasn’t getting in the Kings lineup anytime soon. Crescenzi must just be a depth guy for the Monarchs, for now. Maybe he can be a upgrade for Fraz down the road.

    • A big over ager who is a project

    • Oh shoot..but good for him..enjoyed watching him last few development camps..always stood out to me…kept hoping he would have a growth spurt! Listed as 5’8″.
Just too small for this league I kept thinking. Had talked about him with Darryl Evans. He said kid definitely has skill to make it in NHL.Looks like He was right.
      GL Brandon!
      GOKINGSGO!!!

  10. Brown’s style of play is concerning. You don’t lead the league in hits every year the past decade without paying the piper. It’s impossible to maintain that pace/style without hitting the wall at some point. I will without question give him a pass for this year. he deserves it. When playoffs start, he will be the Brown we all expect, I guarantee it! I have no worries. Plant him on the 3rd line for now with Stoll and Frattin. That has the potential of being a solid and reliable line that can thrive on a specific role.

  11. The players seem to have forgotten their roles in the last few weeks, right?

  12. Anyone down to pinch in to get advice from a brujo? :)

We’ll be fine.. As long as we get a playoff spot I trust the boys will turn it up

  13. He will come around. The Olympic break might do these guys some good.

  14. 4 W, 8 L, 2 O pretty much says it all. The defense is NOT playing well!

In last night’s game, the first period was pretty much a normal Kings game, except for Regehr making two terrible mistakes that gave two goals to the Jackets.

The second period went pretty well until Martinez (Regehr was covering his man in the right corner) got away from the defensive area and didn’t pick up the Jacket D-man coming into the zone. That almost cost us another goal. Martinez did recover quickly and keep the puck from crossing the goal line. Phew!!

The 3rd goal, of course, shouldn’t have happened, but bad bounces happen. I’ve seen many good goalies bobble a puck.

On the 4th goal, Jones didn’t have a chance. On the Jackets’ attack, Mitchell didn’t cover his side of the ice. Williams was forced to chase from behind, but he didn’t catch the Jacket player – another defensive breakdown.

Jones was forced to make another nice save, during a penalty kill, when Voynov left the front of the net to help Mitchell, at the left side of the net. And he should have stayed in front of the net!

On the 5th goal, everyone screwed the pooch. Richards, Mitchell, Voynov and Jones. Richards turned it over. Mitchell could have flattened the Jackets player in the middle of the ice, but he didn’t. Then that player passed it to the other Jacket that had slipped in ahead of Voynov who couldn’t catch him. Then Jones attempted a poke check and missed. Mitchell then attempted a poke check, but he missed.

So … the King’s usually mediocre offense has recently been joined by a mediocre defense. What happened to the vaunted Kings defense?!!!!

If the Kings aren’t going to get more than a couple of goals a game, they need a solid defense. That defense just hasn’t been getting it done!!!

    • So they should win every game 1-0 or 2-1? This team can’t score more than 2 goals a game and if we want to kid ourselves into thinking it will all turnaround once we get to the playoffs we will be highly disappointed. The Kings were playing like this prior to the Carter trade and it sure looks like another influx of offensive talent is needed. You can only have so many Fraser, Frattin, Lewis, Nolan types that can’t score and the Brown, Stoll and Richards type that have forgotten how to score.

  15. Ouch…maybe true..as can be said for too many Kings..but ouch.
    GOKINGSGO!!!

  16. Here’s my take on the situation. The Kings offense appears to start with our defense shooting from the point, and then expecting the offense to react to a rebound. Problem is that none of our glorified defensemen can put a shot close to the goalie, so there is no rebound to react to. For the most part, the puck ends up in the corner. We try to dig it out, and sometimes do, BUT if the puck is then centered, there’s nobody left in front of the net, as the offense has now gone to the corners to dig the puck out. Vicious cycle. Either the offense has to take control, or find a couple of defensive players that can at least hit the goalie with a shot!!

    • I hear what you’re saying but it’s easier said than done. It’s a fine line. One extra stick handle can be the difference between a goal or an odd man rush the other way.

You have to create that lane or shooting opportunity. Throwing the puck blindly at the goalie may work some of the time but more often than not it gets blocked, picked off, gloved or knocked in the corner. Having it go in the corner is just part of hockey.

Columbus did a fine job of knowing where your forward is on the transition. Hitting the guy with speed rather than flat footed. Or Marchand making that extra move around Kopi for the goal. There’s a mojo there and it’s called chemistry. I thought we went through all this chemistry crap with TM but maybe not.

If the Kings make the playoffs is it going to be up down up down and the constant merry go round of line mates? I sure hope not. Sutters got to start think about getting it dialed in now being past the half way point.

    • You ARE correct in your observations. I think this falls into the category of the adjustments that need to be made by the team (per Surly).

I don’t know if much of their problem lies in poor coaching. I believe that lot of the problems on this team would be eliminated by a different coaching style (I hate reading Sutter’s after game comments. He drives me crazy!). I hate the way none of the guys can settle in on one line. Sutter is constantly scrambling the lines and shifting personnel (I do understand that there are times when moving some men to a different position can be done in the attempt to get things going.). There IS a limit to how much this should be done. The King’s pre-season of feeling things out and experimenting has continued to this date!

Adjustments DO need to be made – defensively and offensively – on the power play and penalty kill.

The Kings Do need a good top-six left winger.

Yes, they DO need another, reliable, stay-at-home D-man.

They also need their forwards to be constantly aware of defensemen jumping into a play, so that they will automatically drop back and cover the empty corner that they left.

The Kings need a forward (like the many famous forwards that have stood in front of opposing goaltenders and tipped in lots of goals) who loves to battle for position in front of the opposing goaltender, and who has great hands. I’ve been hoping that King could become that kind of forward. Brown is supposed to be that kind of forward.

The Kings need a D-man who can get the puck to a place where that forward can tip it past the goaltender. He doesn’t need to have the hardest slap shot on the planet, but the puck needs to get through to that forward.

      Go Kings!!

  17. “We will be lucky to get Brown at 6 million per year. That would be a hometown discount.” – Jon Hoven, Mayors Manor.

Idiot. And he was so rude to the guy arguing that Brown was worth closer to 4 million per year. It’s crazy how someone can be so certain of their opinions when they’re consistently wrong.

  18. New lines in practice.

    Jim Fox ‏@JimFox19 1m
    @LAKings lines mskate 74-11-22/21-10-77/23-28-14/13-24-73 http://ow.ly/i/4njlI

Unless Sutter is going to use that first line as a shutdown line v Perry/Getz, or he’s forcing Kopitar not to pass, to have to shoot…don’t get Lewis up there. Then again, I don’t see Lewis the way Sutte does. I see a fast 4th line D forward and PK’er, not a first line scoring winger.
And I really wanted to see TT on that line with Kopi, I think he’d be a good fit. Oh well…

    • I agree! That’s exactly what Lewis is! And it would be nice to try Toffoli on that line for awhile as well! But give them a chance to see how it’s going to work. Don’t just do it for one game! :-)

  19. I would like to understand, but I don’t, what Sutter thinks he’s trying to accomplish by putting Toffoli on the grinder line. He won’t learn, and he won’t contribute when he’s playing on a line centered by Fraser. He needs to be where he can receive a quality pass, and also have a player that can do something with a pass that he will give them. Nothing Sutter is doing makes sense to me.

  20. Any of you nut-jobs going to the game tonight? I was thinking about making the trip into enemy territory.

  21. We’ve seen this from Dustin several times before. We get down on him, call him names, call for his head. Then a miraculous thing happens. He starts playing like an MVP. I have been guilty myself of calling out Brown but this time I will hold my tongue, as should you. Remember that your name is Scribbles.

  22. I don’t know if Lewis has been given an assist on Kopitar’s goal, at the Pond, but I played it back in slow motion, and Lewis did get his stick on it! If he hadn’t slightly changed the direction of the pass, the Ducks defenseman would have gotten his skate on it. I’m always complaining about Lewis’s hands, but he came through this time!

  23. Gonna take a break from a Kings hockey. Too much bullshit. Muzzin is absolutely horrible. Yet another horrible, weak, disorganized, negative looking PP. There’s really no point in playing 5-4 it’s just a waste if 2 minutes. And to get kicked in the nuts with steel toed boots Penner scores. Fuck this

  24. I’d like to dedicate this song to the boys

  25. I’m very disappointed … again.

The Kings had a solid first period where they deserved at least the one goal. As for the 2nd and 3rd, forget it. It was defensive breakdowns and a lack of finish in the offensive zone. I would also like to say that I’ve noticed that Richards still passes well, but he hasn’t been receiving passes well or been able to deflect a puck into the net. Carter was unsuccessful tonight, but he sure was trying just about anything in the attempt to get a goal. It’s too bad he didn’t succeed.

(The last 15 games: 4 Wins, 9 Losses, 2 OT)
(The last four games: 3 Losses & 1 OT)

  26. Who was going to the net tonight besides Stoll?
    No fight, kick someone’s ass!
Go into their crease, the way they were going into Quick’s!
For fuck’s sake, be a professional!!!
The power play setup is simple when it’s going bad, one guy in front of the net (at all times),two guys at the dots and two d on the points!
    Shoot the god damn puck!!!
I watched the Pittsburgh game tonight before the Kings started.
    Their fucking PP was amazing!!
The passing, the guy in front of the net and the d actually skated closer with the puck when they had space!!
    Watch the highlights!
    We need a trade, NOW!!!

  27. I really doubt there’s a trade out there that will make this team better :/

  28. Brown-kopitar-Williams king-Richards-carter ?-stoll-toffoli clifford-Fraser-nolan

  29. That kid from TOR is 2 years younger than Kozun, and is signed through 2015, for a 6’5″ defensive center. Seems good to me. Kozun went through waivers, they could have got him for nothing. Like to see him develop into someone who can tell Ryan Reaves to fuck off. Clifford, Nolan, and Crushplowski, whatever his name is. Be nice. My 2¢. Whatever. GKG\X/

  30. Muzzin blogged on the NHL website today. Feel free to give him words of encouragement/rip on him via the moderated comments option. Note his mention of “discipline”… Jeez, talk about passing the buck.

    – “It’s clear that we need to capitalize on some of our chances. We need to bear down. We need to put some goals in and be more disciplined both with our penalties and in our zone.”

    http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=702087&navid=nhl:topheads

  31. I won’t be home tomorrow to watch the game and I’m trying to find it to record. What station will it be aired on?
