How About This Fucking Team Right Here…

We won the Stanley Cup again and you know what’s great? We actually get to keep it this time for a FULL NHL season. All 82 games and the playoffs…until we win it again. That makes me happy.

We are truly the Kings of Hockey and not even the East Coast media can ignore us any longer.

Anze Kopitar will win the Selke.

Dustin Brown proved his worth in the playoffs, when it mattered the most. The regular season – forgotten. But have a better one next season please.

Marian Gaborik should re-sign. Dean Lombardi will worry about term more, dollars less. Marian Gaborik will want term. 5.7 for 5 years will do it. Lombardi will want to give 3. Let’s hope Gaborik takes 4 years.

Coveted free agents will want to play here now but the rules have changed. The question is whether we want them, not the other way around. You play 200 feet, the right way, bring character, integrity and a high-caliber work ethic or go sign with one of the other 29 clubs.

Jeff Carter is the straw that stirs the drink. He may be the most important player on this team next to Drew Doughty. And his annual cap hit is $5.2M.

Tanner Pearson is what Dean Lombardi hoped Trevor Lewis would be. That’s not my original thought. Somebody said it and now I cannot remember who. It was one of our friends…I love Tanner Pearson.

Tyler Toffoli is still young and raw but with some added strength and a better awareness of all three zones, we have a potential 30 / 60 player on our hands.

What incredible experience for Pearson and Toffoli. Will Vey join them next season? It would require pieces to move.

Jarret Stoll has 2-3 years left in the tank. His faceoff skill set, defensive acumen and speed is everything you want from a prototypical depth center.

Justin Williams has his name on the Cup three times. He was the MVP of the playoffs. Great things should happen to great people. And to think some people were insisting on a trade that would ship Justin out. You all know how much we love Stick and that love has never wavered. It’s good business to win and Justin wins.

Dwight King. Still a great smile. Still wish he played to his size. He is an RFA. He made $750,000.00 last season. He will want $2M I think. Dean pay that? He scored 15 goals in the regular season. $1.25?

Mike Richards was nothing short of fantastic in the Stanley Cup Final. Not the biggest, not the fastest, definitely needs to enter camp in better shape aerobically and stronger but, so long as his melon is okay, I hope he stays…although I keep asking myself if Dean is willing to pay over 5 and 1/2 million per season to a guy who plays Richards’ 2013-2014 minutes and with his numbers. And Dean’s evasive comment when directly asked the question about Mike Richards’ future after we won the Cup fairly raises questions about intent.

Kyle Clifford. Great Final. I think we saw Cliffy mature this season. I still want to see him next to Andy Andreoff, my favorite Monarch prospect who may make the club if Lombardi trades Mike Richards.

Trevor Lewis isn’t going anywhere. We have him for two more seasons.

I have some plans for Ducks, Sharks and Canucks fans in the 2014-2015 season…I will probably share them with you.

Drew Doughty is the…Franchise? He is our best defenseman every night. He is a weapon.

Jake Muzzin matured like I have rarely seen. Playing with Drew helps a lot but that’s not the only reason. The kid just grew up in front of our eyes. Crow tastes like shit but it would have been disrespectful to not eat a small plate. Small because we also praised the kid when he did good things.

Slava Voynov had a bad year. It happens. Don’t have another bad one…and I may never forget his deflection and reach that saved our butts in game 5 of the Final. It is burned in my mind. Rare combination of heart stopping while the brain takes permanent photos of a play in slow motion, at the same time.

Willie Mitchell won’t retire. He has 1-2 more season before that. Dean isn’t stupid. He knows Mitchell is damn hard to replace.

Matt Greene. He has a lot of miles on him. Defensive defensemen who play like him have a short shelf life. Two Stanley Cups. Will Greener call it a career? You think I am crazy? I am but look at his history and ask yourself, would you keep playing?

Alec Martinez. A goal that will live in perpetuity. He is signed at $1.1 for another season. And then comes a well deserved raise. We must have 10 + articles demanding Alec play when he was a health scratch at various times throughout the season.

Jonathan Quick. We didn’t need him to be Superman to win. But it’s nice to know he can be if we do.

Darryl Sutter. Love.

Monday at noon is the parade. I can’t make it. I hope you do. I hope you’ll be happy…and stay happy. Because your happiness is important. Get it? Happy.

“Hey Scribe, you feeling okay?”

Happy, how about you?

“So, then, why do you keep using the word happy?”

Was I? Didn’t even notice. Guess I am just a happy guy. It might seem crazy what I am about to say to you, but I’ve just been a real happy guy this entire weekend.

“Uh oh…”

What?

“You jerk”

What’s up?

“I know you…you…you are going to do…don’t do it.”

You seem unhappy right now. You should get happy like me.

“FUCK YOU SCRIBE! Don’t do it, I am not kidding. I will kick your ass from here, up and down Fig until you don’t have one left!”

You are wound up waaaaay too tight. I think you need to get…

“Shut up!”

Get…

“SHUT. UP!”

Okay fine, have it your way…I won’t do it…

“Thank you.”

You’re welcome…whatever makes you happy.

“DICK!”

  1. Cant make the parade. Took last week off work to 1) get stuff done around the house 2) unfry my brain 3) be home on time for every game of the finals. Can’t justify any more time off for today. I hate that I miss out on so much Kings stuff living in San Diego. It’s painful to be so close, but not close enough to participate in most things. If I lived close enough to make regular live games practical I’d own season tickets and be there for damn near everything. Hey Governor of California Fuck that high speed train to Vegas or where ever. How about a high speed train from my house to Staples?

It’s ok. I can wipe my tears on our two Stanley Cup banners, and now our two trump Anaheim’s one, so I can safely use theirs to wipe something else.

In 2012 it was a work night. I watched them win in a quiet house. This time, I watched in a room of 20 people. It was a great night with friends (and strangers – watching at my friend’s brother’s house, when the Cox feed went out, the neighbor with DirectTV invited us all in and saved our bacon). It was a collective heart attack followed by a noise far louder than should be possible from 20 people. It was hugs and high fives and a spilled tray of potato skins that absolutely nobody was upset about.

In 2012, I was at game 4. Arrived wearing a throwback (gold) jersey that has no name or #. Bought a home plate jersey with a finals patch, and swapped it outside staples. Watched the pregame interview outside staples with Bob and Jim, and Jim signed my throwback. Need to get that jersey turned into a Fox jersey…
That home plate jersey. I wore it during Game 4 in 2012. I wore it again at the watch party for Game 4 this year. That jersey might need to stay in the closet…

  2. So………… Kings are behind Chicago, Boston, and Pittsburg with the oddsmakers eh? That’s just stupid. What else can you expect from guys who prefer every other sport to hockey. Dynasty speak is a little silly. At least until we win next year. If we go in as the favorite come playoff time, and repeat. Then we can talk Dynasty. For now I’m content with consistent contenders, properly coached and managed. Can’t wait to see how the lines shake out next year, and what kids may make the team. I also think Gabby wants to stay and will sign a fair deal. The top line for the Kings should be at the top of the league for the regular season as well next year. All is as it should be. \X/

    • Don’t be sad or angry at the odds, be thankful and use it to your advantage. I’ve pocketed approximately $2600 buck over that last three years with my annual $100 bet. Let them keep putting us at 9/1-12/1 odds. I’ll take it with a smile!

      • Gee..I was going to brag about my $10.00 future bets :-)
Least I made $$ to pay for my FF Tickets.

        • You brag on, girl! :) Any money is good money, right? I’m clapping for you!

I’ve made the same bet for 12 years minus the lock-out year, so I was obviously in the red until recently. But, oh, how things have changed! Yeah, baby! My heart and my wallet are all smiles!

    • I saw those odds too…..was surprised I didn’t see San Jose in the top 3. Fuck it, we got the cup and somebody is gonna have to rip it outta our cold dead hands!
Ahhhhhhh….. 2 time Stanley Cup champion
Los Angeles Kings has a beautiful ring to it.
You can put your chonies on until next years playoffs my friend!

I’m not sure the UFA pool is particularly helpful to the Kings for the most part, though, I think Pouliot could be an interesting pickup. Could you imagine him replacing King on a line with Stoll and Williams?

“Tanner Pearson is what Dean Lombardi hoped Trevor Lewis would be. That’s not my original thought. Somebody said it and now I cannot remember who. It was one of our friends…I love Tanner Pearson.”

Tanner Pearson is our answer to Williams getting over. This kid is going to be a monster.

“Kyle Clifford. Great Final. I think we saw Cliffy mature this season. I still want to see him next to Andy Andreoff, my favorite Monarch prospect who may make the club if Lombardi trades Mike Richards.”

Cliffy has reached a next level during these playoffs, especially in possession. Then he started busting out
crazy power forward moves and I was like :-O

  5. I think Dean needs to find a way to keep Richards. I don’t think this season is necessarily indicative of a downward trend with him. Yes he’s expensive but he contributes a lot of those damned “intangeables” plus his leaving might affect Carter in negative way, considering the bromance they share. Look all we’ve done since Richards got here is win. I think it would be bad juju to get rid of him if we can afford it.

  6. You know what just dawned on me? The Kings are the NHL equivalent of the San Antonio Spurs. Gotta get back to work, but think about it! Am I right? ok later…

    • No, hockey should never be compared to the NBA. Just like real basketball should never be compared to the NBA.

  7. …..just…….perfect.
