Poll – Should Gary Bettman Have Participated in the L.A. Kings Banner Raising Ceremony

Poll time, kids. Bonus Poll! … [Read more...]

I Disagree with Tom Hoffarth of the Daily News.

Tom Hoffarth's Daily News article about Gary Bettman was a tough read - not because I disagree with his ultimate conclusion that Gary Bettman should have participated in the L.A. Kings banner raising ceremony (and I do disagree with Tom)  but because he was all over the place. He was passionate though, I will give him that. Tom, if you're reading this, thank you for writing about our hockey … [Read more...]

My Way vs. Their Way – Why We Will Have NHL Hockey This Season

Negotiations are fluid. There are ebbs and flows. There are hard stops and steady rolls. Every negotiation of a large-scale reaches a point of no return. That "point" in the NHL vs. NHLPA CBA negotiations is the season cancellation. The rumors, from the pundits and others, is that Gary Bettman is under intense pressure from the owners (those with power) and he has been told that losing the … [Read more...]

Bettman and Fehr Meet Santa Claus

Donald Fehr and Gary Bettman, each having received a message from Santa Claus, arrive at the North Pole for Santa's requested meeting. They sit in Santa's office. … [Read more...]

The Owners Are Upset Because They Can’t Eat the Players’ Cake and Fuck Them Too…

The most complicated contracts generally come down to simple and core principles. I was pleased to finally see some emotion in these negotiations. The fact Gary Bettman looked like he may cry tells me there is finally some traction. The players and Donald Fehr have gotten the owners and Bettman's attention. About that time. There are lots of clichés for this. Getting down to the brass tacks. … [Read more...]

The Gary Bettman and Donald Fehr Meeting You Won’t Read About Elsewhere…

Tuesday evening, the players and owners meet privately, without Gary Bettman and Donald Fehr in the room. Bettman and Fehr sit and wait, just outside the locked doors.  … [Read more...]

Antitrust, Distrust, Decertification and Detox From Diatribe…What Else is New?

L.A. Kings fans are a lucky bunch. During the chill of the NHL lockout, we have a 16-4 playoff run and a Stanley Cup Championship to warm our cockles. With the talk now of decertification (the ultimate "oh yeah?!" to the owners) over what is rumored to be a $182 million difference between the NHL and NHLPA over five years (which is about $1.2 million or so per team, per people who decided to do … [Read more...]

What NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly Meant to Say Is…

Have you heard the news? The NHL news? The NHL, Bill Daly, cancellation of all the games through October 24 news? "We were extremely disappointed to have to make today's announcement. The game deserves better, the fans deserve better and the people who derive income from their connection to the NHL deserve better. We remain committed to doing everything in our power to forge an agreement that is … [Read more...]

Scribe’s Tuesday Thoughts and Tidbits

Random thoughts... A lockout means I save money, see my family more, eat 41 more home cooked meals between now and next April and I am fucking pissed off about it. I like dogs because they are not people. I like people because they are not cats. On a keyboard, the letter "F" is to the right of D. The letter "S" is to the left of D. Do Ducks fans think this is coincidence? You fucking suck! How … [Read more...]

The NHL Owners Must Be Left Spittin’ Blood…

In negotiations, I have been called a hard ass, asshole and, well, even worse. I negotiate big contracts. It's part of my job. The CBA negotiations between the NHL players and the NHLPA more than peaks my interest - I am into it. I have gone back and looked at 2004 again just to remind myself what happened. The quotes from that time period are something else. Gary Bettman's bullshit was so thick … [Read more...]

Stop Calling the NHL Players “Staff”

Mark Spector, whom I like and respect, tweeted to Alann Walsh, "there wouldn't BE work for a lot of folks if the staff took home 57% of the revenue, Allan." This is a pervasive thought among some, generally those who are the owners' proponents in the NHL CBA negotiations...which I don't believe Mark is. The NHL players are not "staff". They are the company. They are the franchise. They are who … [Read more...]

Welcome Back my Friends to the Show That Never Ends…

I sat down a few nights ago and watched game 6 from beginning to end...for the 24th time. It was the first time I didn't cry at the end (what a pussy, right?) although my eyes welled up a little when Trevor Lewis scored the empty netter...go figure. As my hunger for L.A. Kings hockey grows and I am pretty damn ready for the season to start, I read a lot of talk out there and very little action … [Read more...]

Response to Larry Brooks: Gary Bettman is an Advocate, Nothing More.

Larry Brooks of the New York Post wrote an engaging article about the NHL owners' offer to the NHLPA. I read the article and applauded Brooks' advocacy of his opinion about the negotiations. The article was well thought out and persuasive. I am not a fan of Brooks in general but this was a nice marriage of wit and venom posing as compelling logic. Coincidentally, that "advocacy" was the only … [Read more...]

So, Where Are The Anaheim Ducks’ Fans?

Unlike Surly, I spend most of my days and nights in Orange County - currently I would put myself at about 20% L.A., 70% O.C. and 10% down the rabbit hole. I am not shy about team pride. Shirts, workout clothing, hats, and my car show the love. Lately, I have noticed a trend. About 2 months ago, I saw a guy and gal in Chipotle's parking lot. He drove my identical car (which is not an easy … [Read more...]

Grievance Filed, Bloggers Riled

Last night Helene Elliott reported that the Kings have filed a formal grievance with the NHL against the Edmonton Oilers in regards to the Ryan Smyth / Colin Fraser fiasco. This week on Judge Judy, Fraser saw another doctor by recommendation of league lawyer David Zimmerman, to reevaluate the ankle injury an LA doctor thought might heal by right of miracle. Jesus was too busy in Norway however … [Read more...]

SUGGESTED NAMES FOR THE NEW WINNIPEG FRANCHISE

I don't want to be accused of not doing my part to find a name for the new Winnipeg NHL franchise. So, I put my thinking cap on and came up with these off the top of my head. If you have any others, please share. Given the City’s very high crime rate, The Manitoba Murderers. In case you don’t know what “Winnipeg” actually means, The Manitoba Muddy Waters. I can see a whole Blues … [Read more...]
