The Case For Jeff Carter > Rick Nash

I’ve stayed pretty quiet on this whole Rick Nash to the LA Kings hubbub, partially because Scribe is spasming out far more than our quota of trade speculation posts but mostly because I haven’t really settled on a feeling about trading for Nash. My general thoughts have been that no trade will rectify what ails the Kings but also that this team needs a bit of a core shakeup. I’ve been warming to the idea of trading Brown, am 50/50 on losing Johnson and there was a moment during the Calgary game on Saturday when Kopitar had a chance to recover a puck at the blue line during a powerplay but instead stood uselessly at the right point while Williams lost the puck and the zone that made my teeth clench, my rage spike and one of the more obnoxious voices in my head yell ‘Trade his ass!’. Just a flash. I’ve since calmed. A little.

However one thing of which we can all agree, even considering Scribe’s worming into Lombardi’s mind, is that creating a big hole (read: Brown or Johnson) while acquiring a big player doesn’t help all that much. Continue reading

L.A. Kings vs. Calgary Flames Post Game: Circle The Date, Mr. Lombardi

From Dean Lombardi in November of 2010:

“I’ve been amazed at how many people have been behind (building through the draft) and a lot of people stuck it out. I’d heard L.A. was a bandwagon town, but a lot of people stuck by us when we weren’t that good. I’m happy for them, but we’ve got to give them a lot more. It’s been 44 years and they have haven’t won a championship. If any place deserves it, it’s this town.”

To Dean Lombardi, we write: This is your team. The one you wanted. The one you built. With your coaches. And an open checkbook from ownership. We have done our part. We have been patient. In April of this year, it will be 6 years of patience…with you. But I have another date for you. Circle it. March 19, 2012. It is the 9th anniversary of your termination as general manager of the San Jose Sharks.

Do you think you will make it to March 20 this season?

Do you think you deserve to?

The Flyers Want To Trade James van Riemsdyk To L.A.? Color Me Curious

James van Riemsdyk.

Surly has been slow with the uptake around the league but I think even he knows who van Riemsdyk is. Let’s recap.

2007 draft, 2nd overall. I remember that draft. Every Kings fan remembers that draft, the “Hickey draft.”

Turning 23 in May. Like it.

6’3″, 200 pounds. Dig it.

Left wing…let me double check that. Yes, left wing. Love it.

A $4.25 million dollar cap hit through 2017-2018. Not bad.

Flyer. Ugh. Ok, whatever.

Does not capitalize the v in Van. A little weird but I like the three name thing. It’s like having our very own Ryan Nugent Hopkins without the – Continue reading

The L.A. Kings Just Can’t Finish & I Am Exhausted Watching It

It’s not a fluke. It’s not a streak. It’s not a trend. It’s our fate.

Fuck you Dean Lombardi for not drafting and developing a single top 6 forward in 5 years and 10 months.

Fuck you for not valuing offense.

Fuck you for hiring Jamie Kompon. Fuck you for ever making Terry Murray our coach.

Fuck you for making every answer you give to a question sound like a filibuster. Fuck you in general and out of principle.

I am tired of seeing us lose 1-0 and 2-1. What is this, the 9TH game where Jonathan Quick has given up 1 goal and we have lost? 22ND game where we have scored 1 goal or zero? How many times have we been shut out? You’re going to do what now? Gut that defense and goaltending so you can bring in a goal scorer at the cost of a $7.8 million dollar per season cap hit? Because you chose Thomas Hickey, Colten Teubert, Derek Forbort? Because you could not land a single top free agent forward? Fuck you for being you. Continue reading

Does Dean Lombardi Care About Winning Above All Else?

Dean Lombardi loves the Yankees or at least he loves to talk about the Yankees.

How many times have we read or heard his quotes equating something hockey related to baseball and the Yankees. I got to thinking about that tonight. I got to thinking about the Yank of all Yankees, George Steinbrenner. George once said:

Winning is the most important thing in my life, after breathing. Breathing first, winning next.

Does Dean Lombardi agree with this? My initial answer was…I don’t know. You’ve probably seen our Quotable Lombardi page. It’s under Surly & Scribe features at the top of this site. It’s a collection of his quotes from April 2006 through the present day. We think we got most of them. He said this in December 2011:

You never see exactly what your coach sees, but for the most part, I think it’s safe to say that with the expectations this year, it becomes more result-orientated. I guess, again, this goes back to (a previous) question. Every situation is different, and the challenge for a coach, as well as players, when you have expectations it’s driven more to results. It’s harder, at times, to look for those victories within losses. That’s just the state of the franchise right now. You could look for more of those things three years ago, but we’re trying to push to the next level. And it isn’t easy. It’s a lot easier playing with the house’s money. So I think, to answer your question, you’re never going to see things exactly (the same) but I do think we’re at the stage of the franchise where you’re going to be judged on wins and losses and playoff rounds. And that’s where you strive to be. It’s a lot easier when there’s no expectations, and with every win you can get a parade. We’re not there right now, so it comes down to wins and losses. In Breaking News, 1 Goal Is Not Enough To Defeat NY Islanders

It was a battle of nitwits.

Skill vs. Toughness.

Brawn vs. Finesse.

The sole sniper with a single bullet and an eagle eye in the brush vs. the wild spray of the blind barbarian’s machine gun fire.

The barbarian is on the ground, a bloody hole amid his brow.

Mark Streit, oh captain, their captain, ended a 1-1 tie shortly into overtime to send the Kings to Dallas to finish out their road trip, where they can at best garner 5 points out of a possible 12 before heading back to Staples.

Ugh.

Hey, at least is was a fairly exciting game. Quick made some fantastic plays as the small but talented Islanders forward bunch darted in and out of the slot in the Kings end. He also smacked Parental Abuse Parenteau down to the ice which was highly amusing. Gotta love the edge our boy Quick has added to his game this year. Jordan Nolan put us all on the edges of our seats at least 4 times with would be first NHL goal in first NHL game scoring chances. Finish? Hah, at this point we should consider the chances themselves to be strokes of genius luck. Dwight King didn’t suck, Doughty played one of his better games and Andrei Loktionov scored his first goal of the season. Huzzah!

Huz… Hu… Well after that it’s more like a Beavis & Butthead “huh-huh-huh”. Because you’d have to be an idiot to smirk at anything else that the Kings have done lately.

We Play The NY Islanders At What Time? An Openly Annoyed Forum

There is a conspiracy against me to inhibit me from watching any more Kings games. It’s what Matthew Barry might refer to as being ‘blessed’ but I find disturbing. Disturbing mostly due to the fact that I’m not all that upset about it. There was a time not too long ago that I agonized over missing even a single period of LA Kings hockey yet here I am today, tired after an exhausting week, having missed the last 4 games and having little intention of waking up earlier than I have to on a Saturday morning in order not to miss a 5th. I’m about as fond of watching hockey at 10am as I am sunbathing at midnight.

Sure, one could say my apathy is largely because it’s not easy to get riled up to watch the Kings take on a team that may just be duller to watch than they are, the New York Islanders. You wouldn’t be totally wrong to say that. But you’d be missing the far more depressing point that watching a team you love struggle to score at a pace that would have been bad even for the decrepit New Jersey neutral zone trap era of clutching and grabbing is not a recipe for a spicy weekend.

Still, with Dwight King and Jordan Nolan set to make their 2011-2012 NHL debuts as top six wingers, roles they weren’t pegged to reach in the duration of their NHL careers, who better for us to play than the NY Islanders, who have been making top 6 forwards out of bottom 6 forwards for over a decade. Take note young ones, just because you are in bigger shoes than your feet can fill does not mean you shouldn’t be able to score dem goals.

Poor Greg Wyshynski, Rich Zach Parise

Surly and I like Greg Wyshynski. He is a good writer and runs a successful website for Yahoo Sports’ Puck Daddy that has the more than occasional sense of humor and doesn’t always take itself too seriously. Hey, anyone who gives Ryan Lambert a job has to enjoy laughing and be playing with someone else’s money. As far as we can tell, Greg has one glaring character flaw and that is his undying allegiance to the New Jersey Devils. Today, Greg gave us this regarding Zach Parise. It is a double shot of lamentation with a chaser of concession.

At the Board of Governors meeting in Ottawa last weekend, it was confirmed that the New Jersey Devils are being subsidized as a financial train wreck forwarded revenue payments as their ownership group continues to battle and they face an $80 million debt obligation that could lead the team to bankruptcy.

So, good times then …

Indeed.

News on the state of New Jersey increased the speculation about captain Zach Parise leaving the State of New Jersey before he hits unrestricted free agency next summer. But according to the NY Post, word around the League is that Parise will remain a Devils through next month’s trade deadline. Well, We’re Fucked

I knew the Edmonton Oilers were a strong offensive team. I admit I am highly envious of their leading scorer, Jordan Eberle, who I just love to watch. I haven’t seen much thus far of their second leading scorer, the infant Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Does anyone else ever imagine that Ted Nugent raped Bernard Hopkins and shat out this kid? A glance at the horrible misfortune of Ryan’s underdeveloped face lends credence to this notion of his progeny. Second on the Oilers in goals is the Colin Fraser equivalent Ryan Smyth, who is also third in points. Toddler Taylor Hall is fourth.

20120114-230110.jpg

When 116 assists halfway through a season only gets you 4th in team scoring, it doesn’t really matter how good your defense is or how All Starry of a goalie you have, you’re fucked. The Kings may as well just mail this one in. It’s hopeless.

If Nothing Else, Dustin Penner Is A Funny Guy…

As most of you know, Kings left wing Dustin Penner has been a frequent guest on MayorsManor since arriving in Los Angeles last February. He’s often brought a great sense of humor and insight to this site when talking about hockey and life in general. A lot has gone down since he was a last minute scratch against the Columbus Blue Jackets last Saturday. The following open letter comes directly from the man himself…

So it seems as though I need to address Pancakegate for those in the sports media world, as well as those following #pennercakes on twitter, in light of the recent phenomenon I’ve created.

Right off the bat, I’d like to clarify a few things.

For example, they were vegetarian pancakes. The injury happened as I was sitting down to eat, not mid-bite. And yes, I did finish them.

There has been some feedback from the media as a whole regarding the lack of transparency involving injuries. So, I decided to be candid.

Kings Get The Gift Of Labarbera And Beat Coyotes 4-3

A non sequitur.

I brought my fiancé to the game. She doesn’t come to many, this being her first of the season. She has to do her girly thing during the second intermission and it takes a girly amount of time, meaning she misses Mitchell’s and Brown’s goals in the third. She finally arrives and starts to walk up the isle of section 315… While play is in progress. What is a guy to do? Being a man of principle, there is only one thing to do. I yell. “You can’t walk up here during play!”. Meanwhile she’s shoving her way past disgruntled Kings fans. Shame on my household, on my good Surly name. Mrs. Surly, reinforcing her man’s namesake. As she sits down, that constant thorn in our side Daymond Langkow scores.

So you can blame one goal against on Mrs. Surly.

The other two, you can blame on Quick, or if you are feeling more venomous, as I texted to Scribe, “Raffi Cocksuck fuckface asslick dickhole bitchtaint Torres.”. Now that the requisite cursing and griping is out of the way, we can finally discuss the game.

The Case For Carlyle & Dean Lombardi’s Courage Or Lack Thereof

From Helene Elliott:

Randy Carlyle, who coached the Ducks to the Stanley Cup title in 2007 but was fired Wednesday because of the team’s prolonged struggles, said Saturday he has been traveling “an emotional road” since his dismissal and will take a brief fishing trip to Northern California before considering his hockey future.

“We’ll see,” he said when asked whether he expects to coach in the NHL again. “I’m working on putting one foot in front of another for the next couple of days.”

I started this article with that quote to make a point. Randy Carlyle and Terry Murray are very different coaches. Murray is an apathetic and stoic coach. He is unwilling, by his own admission, to motivate. He is inflexible, refuses to adapt and evolve from the game he used to coach and teams, pre-lockout, played. He is what you have seen each of the four seasons – a coach without a greater success despite greater talent and one, with the exception of seemingly random and illogical line shuffling, that perpetually does the same thing with the expectation of a different result.

Randy Carlyle is intense. He is a disciplinarian. He commands the best from his players. He coaches a style that has proven itself capable of winning the Stanley Cup in the post-lockout NHL. He took a Ducks team that should have finished no higher than 11th in the Conference last season to the playoffs and damn near past the first round. In his career coaching a young Ducks team with a mixture of proven veterans, he led them to this (from Wikipedia): Continue reading

Love The Johnson-Voynov Pairing, Hate The Forward Lines…Total Derp

This is how the L.A. Kings practiced today.

Gagne-Kopitar-Brown
Penner-Stoll-Williams
Richardson-Loktionov-Westgarth
Clifford-Fraser-Moreau

Scuderi-Doughty
Johnson-Voynov
Drewiske-Greene

You may recall I have hoped / wished / dreamed of a Johnson-Voynov pairing several times on this site. Bluntly, I didn’t think I would get it. Well, somebody was listening or it was total coincidence…my guess is the latter. While I am excited to see those two together, I look at the forward lines and pull a Wil Wheaton sound effect…derp. Taking Randy Carlyle’s Advice & Finding Inner Peace

Jeff Miller of the Orange County Register tweeted:

Randy Carlyle met with Bobby Ryan today concerning trade rumors and told him he “has to find that inner peace in himself to deal with it.”

Sage advice. This got me thinking. Bobby Ryan is not the only one under stress right now. How about our LA Kings’ players and coaches? Where is their place of inner peace within themselves?

Terry Murray: That place where every NHL scoreboard after overtime reads 0-0 and the shootout is replaced with a dispassionate staring contest among the opposing coaches.

Dustin Penner: The place where I can get $4.25 million per season for being funny and having a kick ass collection of songs on my iPod…and where women don’t lie…and Dean Lombardi loves me.

Kyle Clifford: Where punching others is the preferred means of communication.

Drew Doughty: Inner Peace? 8 years, $56 million, bitch!

Jack Johnson: Where my buddy Bobby Ryan is wearing a Kings’ jersey and Drew plays for a team where we see him twice per season. Continue reading

Jonathan Quick, Robin Hood Of Hockey – Kings Shutout Sharks 2-0

Sometimes your offense overpowers a team, beats them into submission.

Other times your defense suffocates and sterilizes, strangling what mojo the opposition has when they step on the ice.

And then there are those games when a goalie simply refuses to lose.

To explain what needs not be explained, Jonathan ‘Robin Hood’ Quick robbed the San Jose Sharks of their offensive riches and gave back to the offensively poor, his own Kings, the loot of a win. The Kings scored their quota of goals, 2, a lucky lob at the loser Niemi by He Who Shall Not Yet Be Forgiven, Moreau, and an absolute beauty by He-Man Richards off a perfect behind the net feed from Gagne. Meanwhile, Quick far exceeded his quota of brilliant saves.

Drew Doughty Says “No, No, No” To Terry Murray…

We dig The Mayor. Here is a good article and interview he did with Drew Doughty:

Two goals and five assists probably isn’t what GM Dean Lombardi had in mind when he signed the Kings top defenseman to an eight-year, $56-million contract in September.

It was something acknowledged over the weekend, when coach Terry Murray spoke about Drew Doughty not giving the team what they need offensively so far this season. However, he wasn’t sure why the points have been slow to come.

And time appears to be a concern, when looking at Murray’s comment – “Now, we’re 20 games in…it’s important that we find the answer and get him going.”

Just prior to the Kings leaving for St. Louis, I asked Doughty if maybe he could explain his lack of point production…

“I don’t really have a reason for it,” said the 21-year old defenseman. I feel like I’m creating chances. I hit the post last game. I’m getting chances, I’m getting shots on net. I feel like I’m making some good plays to set up other guys, as well. Sometimes, it’s just about getting those bounces. Continue reading

L.A. Is To Newark As Paradise Is To Lost – Come Home Zach Parise

No, I will not get off this. He is ours…he just doesn’t know it yet. As further evidence, from the NY Post.

First one of Zach Parise’s high-powered Toronto agents showed up in Tampa, then the other at Monday’s Florida Fiasco.

Barely three months from the Feb. 27 trade deadline as the Devils play host to the Blue Jackets tonight, the double-team signals the Parise Press is on.

Friday, it was super-agent Don Meehan, founder and head of Newport Sports Management, dining with the Devils captain in Tampa. Then Parise’s lead representative, Newport’s Wade Arnott, turned up in Fort Lauderdale to schmooze and discuss Parise’s next contract. But not strategize, they said.

“It was nothing. I just hadn’t seen them in a while,” said Parise, 27, making $6 million this season.

Most opposition figures firmly believe Parise will play elsewhere next season. Their arguments are compelling.

First, the Devils’ financial picture doesn’t inspire confidence the Devils can afford to be competitive regarding his contract, nor competitive in acquiring other players to build the Stanley Cup winner that has always been Parise’s objective. Continue reading

Reader Eli Asks – Are We Better Off Without Dustin Penner?

It’s always fun when a reader feels so passionate about a subject, that he or she takes the time to write an article and sends it to us for consideration. One of our readers, Eli, has strong opinions on Dustin Penner. When I first read this, my initial reaction was, “there is a lot of truth here…and some conclusions for which he will get a little grief.” So, read away, it’s a long one, and give Eli your unedited thoughts.

Following last season’s first round exit at the hands of San Jose, the Kings organization took a number of steps in the offseason, including the massive trade for Mike Richards and signing Simon Gagne, to improve the team from playoff caliber to Stanley Cup contender. Those moves, along with the Drew Doughty drama that captivated (and frustrated) most Kings fans, were the story of the offseason. However, the Kings, 16 games into the ’11-’12 season, sit ninth in the Western Conference and three points out of the Pacific lead (but Dallas has a game in hand). This is not how it’s supposed to be.

We can blame the coaching, management, or the players, but ultimately, it’s on all three parties to contribute to a winning team. Since management and the coaching staff have not significantly changed recently (not to imply they don’t have a hand in the Kings’ struggles of late), I can’t help but look at the roster and try to find ways my team could improve. This brings me to the question that has been raised repeatedly since before last season ended – a question I’m certain all Kings fans have asked themselves and each other. Are the Kings better off without Dustin Penner? Continue reading

Three L.A. Kings Related Events Coming Up & A Funny, Strange & Disturbing Story

First up, Tip A King, 2011. That’s this Sunday, right? I think so. I am not into autographs but if a player is there, I am there, there is a pen sitting around and something to sign, then yeah, sure, I’ll drink a beer while someone else gets an autograph.

Next up, a fun one – Morton’s The Steakhouse in downtown (735 South Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, 90017; 213-553-4566) has partnered with EPSN Radio to host a special lunch on Wednesday, November 16 at 11:30 am with NHL and L.A. Kings Legend / Icon / Living Deity and current President of Business Operations, Luc Robitaille as the guest of honor. Guests at the event will meet Luc and he will answer questions from 710 ESPN hosts, Max Kellerman and Marcellus Wiley.

Guests will enjoy a three-course lunch and, if you have not eaten at Morton’s, it’s simply awesome. Tickets are $50 per person. Reservations are a must and can be made by calling Spenser Dayoub at 213-553-4586. More details are available online. I was flattered when Morton’s fine people asked me to cover the event. As such, I will be there. If you can attend, let me know. Would love to see some of our readers there. Continue reading

Hey Penner, What The Hell Is Wrong With You?

You skate out on the ice. You are behind the play. You don’t go to the net. You don’t provide any screen.

Go to the net.

Go to the net.

Go to the fucking net.

You skate off the bench. You take your fat ass into the zone. You don’t hang out on the perimeter. You don’t cycle anything. You get to the front of the net with your ass directly in the goalie’s face. What is it going to take for you to do this? Do I have to bend you over and beat you like a Texas Family Court Judge? Go to the net.

If you don’t go to the net, here is what will happen: Continue reading

Terry Murray Wasn’t Present For Tonight’s 3-0 Loss To The Oilers

Here is Terry Murray’s post game quotes, courtesy of Rich Hammond.

(on the lack of offense…)

MURRAY: “The blocked a lot of shots out there tonight. In the early going, especially in the first period, we had a lot of opportunities to get pucks to the net. We used our defensemen very well, low to high, and a lot of pucks were directed toward the net. They did block a lot. I don’t know what the total was on the blocks, I didn’t look at it, but there was no problem with the attitude. The second period, obviously, was the period that was the problem for us.’’

They blocked shots? Really, coach? How about a lot of shots were thrown at shins, bodies and sticks. Tonight was your “shot mentality” on full display.

(on how much of the play was “uninspired”…)

MURRAY: “None.’’

When flinging shots at the net resembles a blind monkey flinging poo (“shit” didn’t sound as fun) + no sustained pressure because of your shot mentality (which is its byproduct as a haphazard shot without a lane and traffic = a turnover) + a frustrated bunch of players who looked out of sync = “inspired”, somebody is a moron. Some Thoughts From Early In The Season

Yes, I know it’s early, and drawing any conclusions from what we are seeing is a fool’s errand, but I just want to make a few observations.

Is it just me, or has Jack Johnson become a true number one defenseman? I swear, the guy skates as well as Doughty, is a terror with the puck on his stick and makes big plays when it counts. He is even a +6 in a statistic that has always shown him in a less than flattering light. Doughty holding out and then getting injured may have been the best thing to happen to the Kings as it has allowed Johnson to emerge. Continue reading
