Well, We’re Fucked

I knew the Edmonton Oilers were a strong offensive team. I admit I am highly envious of their leading scorer, Jordan Eberle, who I just love to watch. I haven't seen much thus far of their second leading scorer, the infant Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Does anyone else ever imagine that Ted Nugent raped Bernard Hopkins and shat out this kid? A glance at the horrible misfortune of Ryan's underdeveloped … [Read more...]

The Good, The Bad And The Ugly

With the start of training camp just around the corner, this is an appropriate time to analyze and evaluate the moves the Kings  made this summer. As I have previously stated, expectations for this season are higher than they have been in some time. Is this roster and staff good enough to meet this heightened outlook? We shall see. The Good: I always believed the key to success this offseason … [Read more...]

Surly & Scribe Chat With Helene Elliott, Part I

I had the pleasure of interviewing Helene Elliott on September 19 of last year. If you have not read it, you are missing out. My goal then was to get to know the experienced and decorated L.A. Times Sports Columnist whom L.A. Kings fans applaud or frown toward for her no-nonsense articles. She was warm, charming, classy and so very generous with her time and the interview brought perspective to … [Read more...]

A Shortcut To Thinking Is Not Thinking

Since there is some friction from certain media types (or, more accurately, one) about our Drew Doughty news and since this comes from someone who I respected (and still do) but who has probably never read the site, let's get a few things straight: A deal in principle (having handled hundreds before they came to fruition or needed further tweaking, which I am not sure this person can say for … [Read more...]

Dean Lombardi Is Pissed Off…Steve Tambellini Is A Prick, Part III

For Part I, click Steve Tambellini is a prick. For Part II, click Steve Tambellini is a prick, II. Now, for Part III. This part will include the Lombardi Translator 2011 upgrade version courtesy of...moi...This is from Helene Elliott's article. Kings General Manager Dean Lombardi, contending the Edmonton Oilers have twice traded him players who are not able to play, said Friday he will … [Read more...]

COLIN FRASER INJURED; TAMBELLINI IS A PRICK II

As a sequel to Steve Tambellini is a Prick, Part I, we bring you the sequel co-starring Colin Fraser. Colin Fraser, acquired by the LA Kings in the Ryan Smyth does his impression of Lassie and runs home trade, has an injury that will keep him out of the lineup...for the first two months of the season. The injury is allegedly more serious than just the inherent psychological defect associated … [Read more...]

ERIK COLE MAKES TOO MUCH SENSE FOR THE LA KINGS

On November 25, 2010, I wrote about Erik Cole and how I wanted him to fill our left wing need. I love Erik Cole. His speed, his two-way game, his ability to bury the puck and his leadership. He has a ring. He got that with Justin Williams. The fact he is a left wing only endears me to him more. Add to that he played all 82 games this past season. No injury issues, knock wood. He put up 26 … [Read more...]

OK, NOW I’M PISSED OFF

From Rich Hammond: Ryan Smyth has a conference call going on now to talk about his move back to Edmonton. Smyth made an opening statement, in which he offered thanks to the Kings organization — specifically Tim Leiweke, Philip Anschutz, Dean Lombardi and Ron Hextall — and thanked Lombardi for “accepting my wish to come back to the Oilers’ organization.” Smyth confirmed that he had … [Read more...]

SMYTH’S REPLACEMENT TO BE “MID RANGE”

Dean Lombardi expects Ryan Smyth's replacement to be mid-range. Now, if you take this statement on face value, that takes out any elite wingers or, for that matter, anyone over $4 million (my upper limit of mid-range). More likely than not, we are in the $2.5 to $3.5 range. That limits the options quite a bit from this available left wing UFA list. That also means, if again you take Lombardi's … [Read more...]

OFFICIAL: RYAN SMYTH TRADE COMPLETE & TAMBELLINI STILL SUCKS

It's all over but the crying. Helene Elliott reports that the Ryan Smyth trade is finally complete. He went to the Oilers like he wanted and the Kings received Colin Fraser and a 7th round pick in 2012. I shut down on this trade after I heard (and read) about Steve Tambellini's antics - there is a job as a snake oil salesman waiting for him if the whole NHL GM thing doesn't work out. Who cares, … [Read more...]

RYAN SMYTH DEAL (NO DEAL) IS DEAD TO ME

So, now the banter back and forth about Ryan Smyth is Calgary is in play again and they're close. This deal is dead to me. I have a scowl for Ryan Smyth for putting Dean Lombardi in this situation. I have a middle finger for Steve Tambellini. I officially have no idea what Jay Feaster is doing in Calgary after trading Regehr and then signing Tanguay to his deal. Regardless, I am shut down as it … [Read more...]

TOP 10 REASONS STEVE TAMBELLINI IS BEING A PRICK

So, the LA Kings have a deal worked out with the Oilers regarding Ryan Smyth. A 4th (or 5th) + Gilbert Brule's salary before he is bought out. It hits a snag. Why? Because Steve Tambellini and the Oilers haven't submitted the necessary paperwork to clear Brule so Lombardi can turn around and buy him out. Now, ask yourself this - why the hell does Brule even need to be in this deal? It's not like … [Read more...]

TAMBELLINI IS A LIAR OR LOMBARDI IS PARANOID

If the new rumors are true and the sticking point of the previously agreed upon Smyth for Brule and a 4th trade is indeed Brule's health concerns, then only two things seem possible. Either Tambellini is lying or Lombardi is paranoid. Tambellini said after the draft today that Brule has been cleared to play for a long time. Well, if that is true and it is also true that the Kings intended to … [Read more...]

ITS OFFICIAL – RYAN SMYTH IS GOING TO FREEZE HIS ASS OFF NEXT YEAR

The trade is done, per Darren Dreger at the draft. It would seem some complications arose this morning, with the original deal being to Calgary pending Smyth's approval. Ryan preferred Edmonton (Duh) and allegedly asked Oiler GM Steve Tambellini to up his offer to beat Calgary's. The result is a 4th round pick and former boom hopeful, now nearly bust, winger Gilbert Brule. Now, Dreger is … [Read more...]

UPDATES ON RYAN SMYTH & DREW DOUGHTY

Please take this with the appropriate grain of salt. As you all should know, nothing is done until it is signed and approved. The puck is on Ryan Smyth's stick (I thought the expression, the ball is in his court sounded odd, given we are talking hockey). The deal has been worked out and only he can say yes or no at the end of the day (tomorrow). If you have ever signed off on a deal and … [Read more...]

RYAN SMYTH ASKED DEAN LOMBARDI FOR A TRADE FOR “FAMILY REASONS”

Dean Lombardi finally spoke about the Ryan Smyth "soap opera." It seems Ryan Smyth asked to be traded about 1 and 1/2 to 2 months ago and Lombardi then resigned himself to make the trade. Ryan wanted to go "home", whether that means Canada or, more specifically, Alberta remains to be seen. Dean was surprised by the request. Dean is actively talking with 3 teams...that would be the Oilers, Flames … [Read more...]

RYAN SMYTH TO THE OILERS? I WOULD NEVER SAY I TOLD YOU SO…

I won't tell you I told you so because I didn't. I merely wrote on June 13: LA Kings’ left wing, Ryan Smyth is entering his last season with the team. He is respected, loved, has proven himself a mentor and a valuable contributor on and off the ice. With all of those accolades, the Kings have to find a way to trade him if they want to have any shot of improving their roster through free agency. … [Read more...]

WILL RYAN SMYTH REMAIN AN LA KING?

LA Kings' left wing, Ryan Smyth is entering his last season with the team. He is respected, loved, has proven himself a mentor and a valuable contributor on and off the ice. With all of those accolades, the Kings have to find a way to trade him if they want to have any shot of improving their roster through free agency. His $6.25 million dollar cap hit is a leash around Dean Lombardi's neck that … [Read more...]

A SYSTEMATIC APPROACH TO JUDGING TERRY MURRAY AND HIS “SYSTEM”

Guest writer, J.T. Dutch brings us his view on Terry Murray and the "system" of which I often write. J.T., in many respects, disagrees with me and I look forward to engaging him in dialogue on the subject as I hope you do as well. At some point, enough is enough.  I've heard so many complaints and so many grievances about the Kings' lack of offense in the recently completed season, and the men … [Read more...]

THE ROYAL REPORT CARD, PART II: THE LA KINGS’ TOP SIX FORWARDS

Here is part II of Harry Halkidis' three part Royal Report Card Series In the second installment of this four part series, the performance of the Kings' top six forwards will be analyzed and graded. Anze Kopitar (A+): The Kings fans are blessed to have this rising star grow into a superstar. There are not many players who are considered elite offensive and defensive talents, and Kopitar is … [Read more...]
